A dog is for life, not just for lockdowns

Again, people don’t understand that lockdowns don’t last forever. Many of these who obtained a dog during the early days of lockdown, probably never owned a dog before. Didn’t plan ahead such as what would happen when able to work away from home etc

These are the sort of people who ignore the ‘dog is for life, not just for Christmas’.

Do you know of anyone who got a dog during lockdown last year and want to get rid of it or passed it on to friends or family that have dogs?

I understand that, I suppose. But people don't think ahead? Like.... I don't get it. They want to get rid of them now?
Presumably there'll be an increase in babies up for adoption too, right?
All those thoughtless parents who gave no consideration to bringing a life into this locked-down world before there was even any hope of a vaccine in sight...? :p

Seriously, though, these people are just stupid, selfish ***** and I'd take every one of their dogs away from them if I could.

I must be very naïve. If I were getting a dog I would care for it until its dying day. It would be a considered decision.

My mother / ex father in law had two dogs and one cat on separate occasions in a 3 / 4 year period and rehomed them all… wasn’t in lockdown but I was absolutely gob smacked when they got a second dog a 3-4 of years after getting rid of the first..

Horrible really. Just shows how many people don't think or treat animals as an accessory. No doubt pics in social media.

I wouldn't ever give up my hens

Many colleagues have bought designer puppies, Labradoodles or small dogs that my Nan owned. A couple were saying they were having a period of remorse as these dogs are hard work and as demanding as having a child (not my words).

I would love a Dog and have been thinking even before the pandemic, last was a Mongrel and I would do the same again. a retired Greyhound or Mongrel. If I were to go for a pedigree, a Doberman as my last was a Dobbie cross with a Border Collie - and needed a hell of lot of work, as Collie's are very intelligent and love to be outside all day.

Only I know that my work life will change. Yes you can pay for a Dog Walker, but what's the point if you are away 70%. Also heard some horror stories with paid dog walkers (they don't turn up or lie).

But agree, that this is no surprise and pee's me off no end. Its like people who have kids and then it dawns that its a massive commitment.

The dying day is so brutal. I'll never forget when my West Highland Terrier died in my arms.

I'll also never forget when I was taking my West Highland Terrier into the vet for his booster jabs when he was a pup. Then when we were waiting, a man took his Alsatian into the vets room then minutes later, came out crying with only the leash. The whole vets waiting area was in a deathly silence as they watched him come out. I'll never forget that in 1991.

Should experience the Shih-Tzu breed. Hella demanding. So demanding they can really push or break your patience.

I've been involved in some real world discussions this week about plans to get people back into the office. It's clear that some people who were able to do their job effectively from home during lockdown have made the assumption that they will be able to continue effectively being a home worker in future. So it's proving to be a bit of a shock when they are told that they are expected to resume commuting to work.

Heard an example of a guy that has moved to another city because he assumed that he would hardly ever need to physically show up at his old workplace again. So it's easy to imagine some people failing to plan ahead for what will happens with their pets if they now have to be left along all day.

I only know one person who had to give away their dog, but in their defence their office made it seem like they would continue to work from home regardless of the pandemic.

tbh I wish some of my neighbours would go down the same path, walking along the communal corridor during the day you can tell that a few of them leave their dogs home by themselves most of the day from the constant barking and crying, wouldn't be surprised if a few of them have behavioural problems, I think a few of them can't even take their dogs to a dog park unless it's empty.
