A few ISO/Headunit questions..

Well, the unit itself doesn't have an option for Aux input - there's just a couple of phono sockets on the back, with 'rear' above them. I've plugged a mate's iPod into it before, and its just played in the back.

Hmmm, surely on a head unit, the phono sockets would be the pre-outs, to connect it to an amp?

Normally, if the HU has an AUX connector, it'll be a little blue one with about 12 pins.

I take it you got the Clarion out of there then. Bit of a bitch isn't it.

Can't find any instructions on the Kenwood site for the KDC-W4031.

Does it look like this --->

the blue connector is usually used for the cd changer, and iirc the blue block is only for blaupunkt stereos

my JVC has a circular connector which the CD changer plugs into, but i use an adaptor so that i can plug my mp3 player into it

iirc the phono sockets are pre outs, mine definitley are

Usually, depends on the unit, i removed a sony unit last week which had a pre out and a phono line in.

well its just labelled 'rear' - so it could be anything!

Andy - yep, got it out, took me an hour though!

Mark - yep, its that one, I couldn't find any instructions either!

Weird kenwood are usually quite good at providing on-line instructions, i fitted my kenwood into the MX last week and thats got so many audio options its untrue, i've had the same only playing out of the rears problem, but that was cause my unit it dual zone not sure if yours is capable of the same?

err...no idea mate, its an £85 unit!

I can't actually select an AUX input...

4 x 50 W max. output power
MOSFET amplifier stage
1 RCA pre-outs, 2 Volt
Tone control: Bass/Mid/Treble
Source tone memory
Loudness control
System Q sound system

Looks like you plugging an input into the pre out is somehow making audio come through the rear speakers, don't say anything about any inputs just outputs.

Ah, so its got no inputs?

Quick unrelated question - does a laptop have an amplifier? If i wired in a socket to output to the speakers, could a laptop power them?

Nope not enough power to drive the speakers, you best off getting a cheap car amp thats got High and low level inputs, use the pre out on the kenwood to amp the front car speakers then the other amp input to convert the ipod / laptop signal into a 3.5mm audio jack :)

Whats the cheapest you can pick up a car amp for?

Woohoo results all round :)

I got it off e-bay a little while back with the idea of fitting it under my drivers seat but never actually got round to it, tis a two channel MTX something or nother will dig it out and upload a picture.

edit - tomorrow evening now got work int the morrow!

I seem to have gotten mixed up about the ISO connection, I meant the CD changer input, I've seen it reffered to as the ISO, but the ISO seems to be the block connectors to interface with the car?

Anyway, this is what you would use to connect your MP3 player to the Headunit. Other than the ariel socket do you have another s-video looking round connector? Thats where that cable would connect.

Also, my headunit has a menu that you activate when the unit is off by holding a button and that lets me change thinks like preout settings. Your unit has an AUX mode so it must have the ability to tell the Preout to accept an input rather than output. Do you have the manual? It's RTFM time.

Nice idea thats the standard and rather expensive kenwood cd changer interface to phono aux in, won't work cause this unit don't have a cd changer interface, for ref you can get the same lead off e-bay for £7.99 i got one and it works great ;)

Who on earth sells a modern Headunit without a CD changer interface?! You'd think it's be as standard as USB on a new mobo by now! Esp when the unit cost £85. Thats quite a lump sum for an "Entry-Level" unit.

I've already setup mine for my Pioneer, but I use the full breakout box to add CD changer if I need, plus It was cheap.

Cheers for the heads up on ebay. Seen them, but I daren't try them for the difference price sounds dodgy. But at least now I can reffer to ebay.

I got lucky with my P77MP, at the time it was £250 RRP, got mine for £130 second hand for the sake of a little cosmetic damage. Sounds great.

I'd advise trauling forums and ebay for a cheap second hand unit, much less hassle than trying to bodge it. You could just swap the front speakers connections for the rear on the ISO block. Rear speakers are pretty much waste anyway.

Not with the early 2002 Quiksilver model. It has the space in the glovebox though. I thought it odd for it to not have one though. It has all the sports trim of that year. It dosen't have leccy mirrors either, yet my mates standard LX does. The loom is ready to set it up though, so I'm on the hunt for some leccy mirrors. Mine are always getting knocked.
