I've finally pulled the trigger on an order for a Crucial M4 128GB to replace the mechanical 320GB HD currently in my folks laptop.

Would I be better to clone the current install using the kit included with the M4 or start from fresh? The current install is still pretty untouched as they don't really install programs etc it's just used for web and email. The current drive is also setup to ACHI in the BIOS.

What should I do after the SSD has been installed to improve and maintain performance within Windows?

I did the same thing, with the same drive, and if the install is essentially fresh, so no rubbish like silly browser toolbars have been installed, and no unnecessary manufacturer programs, then it'd be much simpler to clone the current install and of course nothing will be lost.

In terms of what you should do after, basically nothing. As long as AHCI mode is on then windows will take care of TRIM and as long as there isn't 8GB+ of RAM then you won't need to re-size the pagefile or anything.

Great stuff! No need to do anything with the pagfile as the laptop only has 3GB RAM.

I've read I should I turn off drive indexing in Windows, is this right?

This guide should help you out with setting windows up for use with the SSD.
