Hi,

I was wondering what graphics card would best match for my amd 940 and ddr2 1066 ram?

i have an overclock of 3.7ghz on the cpu and 1080mhz on the ram.my monitor is 22" 1680 x 1050

i only have 1 monitor so eyefinity doesnt matter, i have an 8800gt so physx doesnt matter.

i dont care if its nvidia or amd, id like atleast one suggestion of each really

whats overkill? whats underkill? whats juuuuuuuust right?

thanks for any advice.

fair enough! i was starting to think my cpu was getting old and slow, and worse cause its ddr2, that concerns me. i have read threads around already which have budgets so i know what suits what budget, i just wanted to make sure i didnt waste my money when it could have been better spent on another component(s).

budget is around 200 though, so feeling is that gpu upgrade from an 8800gt is best move then?

You won't see much difference from the speed your DDR2 is running at compared to your average DDR3 modules. 8800GT upgrade, I'm just going to suggest this because it's an amazing card at an unbelievable price, IMO you don't need to spend £200.

Ive got a MSI 6850 coming on monday to replace my 8800gt. So will post some comparisons if your still undecided by then

thanks raven for the reassurance.

6850/460 are recommended, why shouldnt i get a better card than that? 6870/470? or even 5870/480?

rav, would be great to know how u get on with that card, i suspect ur rig performs very similar to my own. (maybe some sort of bench mark we can both use to compare would be useful.. 3dmark06 or what ever)

The 460 is a very mid range card. I personally would not undercut my self, if I had the funds and if I expected my card to perform.

I would say you want to get a card in the 6870 / GTX 470 catagory.

I say this becuase these cards are currently the baseline for enjoying DX11 games and which are future proof enough to last a good 2 years.

Of course it matter what resolution you play at.

Edit* at your current res a 460 would probably be ok. but for £30 more you get a 470....

Look at it this way at your resolution the main difference between the 460 and 470 will be the 470 will have more grunt to push out tesselation and other dx11 features as well as have the grunt to churn out respectably frames with physx on.

Heres the heaven benchmark. CPU is clocked to 3.2. Even though its only DX10, ill compare it on monday as wel.

See the image below, get your 460, install MSI afterburner and push the core slider to 800Mhz for nigh on 470/6870 performance, best bang for buck going.

Get the MSI GTX 470 very nice overclockers, l've got mine at 850/1700/2000 > 1025mv, as l'm water cooled my temps are low. You could easly run the card between 750 too 800 with air cooling....

Just bought one of these but not installed it yet as I have an SSD coming and will do a fresh Win 7 64 install sometime this week. Just a better buy than the 6870 until it drops to £175 or thereabouts.:)

6870 or a 470, depends if you're running stock or not, what kind of performance you want and how much power you're comfortable consuming I guess. I'm a bit of an ati fan despite the fact I'm running nvidia right now, an overclocked 460 will be well under budget too, cracking card for the money, just a bit power hungry.

Well either the 470 or 460 will do u fine currently got the 460 clocked at 925 core mem 2000 or 470 @ 875 core 2000 mem

If the 470 is only 30 quid more go for that as it has a higher shader count and resale value
