A level choices

Just choose your favourites. I don't think it really matters after you finish. Computing is better than IT though.

Are you planning on going to any of the top Uni's? If not then you don't really need to worry about what subjects you do unless you want to get on a Science course at Uni with your Drama, Media and P.E A-Levels which even then many universities won't mind as long as you get the grades.

Also, do you not get to pick a fourth subject and then drop a subject at the end of the first year?

Yeh i was always thinking i would do IT at uni [built my first comp at 14] and got A in gcse IT but i was thinking about the jobs out there, and what i want to do it the rest of my life? i want to have something to fall back on.

If you're not entirely sure about what you want to do at university, I'd change IT to Physics, Media Studies to Maths, and Biology to Chemistry :p

In all seriousness though, you will probably get much more use out of doing maths/another science instead of media studies.

Have a look at the specimen papers on the exam board websites
I don't have a lot to add apart from that some courses are filled to the brim with kids who mess around, not much you can do about it. You are less likely to find them in the sciences though.

Meh hate the phrase 'soft subject', it's so elitist and I hate elitism ><

Geography was my favourite subject at A-level. It was a bit like studying a national geographic magazine. We learnt a bit of science, economics and business, environmental studies, biology and of course, art (colouring in).

Geography is hardly a soft subject though. You actually learn some valuable key skills. It certainly complemented my choice or Physics and Maths at the time because it involved a lot more analysis and essay writing.

Media studies on the other hand... what skills do you get from it?

SORRY GUYS ! :) such a dumb ass. i was thinking of doing Biology,IT,Media Studies

If they interest you then go for it, but you will probably make your life a lot easier if you take more classical subjects than IT and media. On one hand you can simply keep your computer and film as hobbies, on the other it might pay to make you hobbies what you focus on at school. Out of these I'd suggest the former, but it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other :)

Media studies on the other hand... what skills do you get from it?

Media skills.

I did ICT to AS level, It was just made up of learning to use some of the extra features within Word, Excel, and Access. The best part of was a small module that our teacher put together at the end of the year to fill in a hole in the timetable which dealt with the history of the personal computer during the late 70s beyond.

Maybe look into doing Chemistry to go with Biology. The two have a bit of overlap and work well together.

What do you actually want to do with these A levels (further ed, employment etc).

Its an eclectic mix and it won't stand out to a University or an Employer, in my view anyway.

Geography is actually an excellent subject to take at A level because it is not considered a soft subject and a lot of places (including Bristol!) put it in the same group as a science. It's also a humanity, has essay writing skills, and is an all round 'helpful' subject to have when it comes to uni. I also found it dead easy, but that's irrelevant.

A 'perfect' set of A levels imo is Maths, Bio/Chem/Phys, English, History/Geography/Computing (depending on what you want to get into, Computing A level can be surprisingly helpful).

Do 4 if you can do them well, unis like that. They were impressed I did 5 even though I screwed up and got Cs in two of them (A*AACC was my final overall A level results in Geography, Computing, Maths, Physics, Further Maths).

I agree. I did Further Maths, Physics, History and English Lit, and could have done pretty much any course I wanted to. The only things you'll have trouble with are sciences which require specific things like Biology, Chemistry or medicine, pretty much anything else is fair game.

If your college offers Computer Science rather than IT that is the one to go for that actually has value. IT is very application orientated whereas CompSci involves programming, maths, worthwhile stuff. Media studies I can't really understand as an A Level choice. If you want to go into media then English Lit won't stop you from doing that, but it will allow you to go elsewhere if you change your mind.
