Recently, with help from this forum, I successfully built my first pc. Now I am trying to overclock and am running into more difficulties than I ever knew I could! I am trying to up the E66OO to 3GHZ. i so desperately want to succeed and would appreciate any help or guidance as I have studied it up but need help to give me the confidence to try it. My set up is

thermaltake va 700 awa full case.antec550 truepower trio.gigabyte 956p-ds3p.ge force 7600 g7 256mb gddr3 tv-out dvi.intel core 2 duo e6600 lga775 Conroe 2.40 ghz.nh-u12f cpu-cooler.2 g ddr2 ultra duel channel kit,2x500gb drives,hp lightscribe 16xdvd writer,liteon dvd rom 16.

This is the cmos set up-
Robust Graphics Booster auto;
cpu clock ratio (9x)
cpu host clock control (disabled)
xcpu host frequency (mhz) 200
PCI express frequencymhz auto
CIA2 disabled
System Memory Multiplier (spd) auto
Memory frequency mhz 800
System Voltage Control -Manual
DDR2 OverVoltage Control normal
PCI-3 OVER vOLTAGE CONTROL -normal
(G)MCH Overvoltage control-normal
FSB Overvoltage control- +0.05v
CPU Voltage control-normal
Normal CPU Vcore 1.35000v
I am monitoring with cpu/z and core temp, also everest
Please lend me an ear!! cheers jos

1:enable host control
2:change freq to 333mhz keep multi at 9x
3: press f10/save/yes

if system is unstable e.g locks up, restarts go back into bios and add some Vcore. Maybe try 1.37500v if still a problem then 1.4v. You shouldnt really need more than that for 3ghz

After that you could play with the memory but lets see 3ghz first as that is your goal for now.

here is a pic to give you an idea. Dont just copy the pic thou

Hello again :)

This is the cmos set up-
Robust Graphics Booster auto;
cpu clock ratio (9x)
cpu host clock control (enabled)
xcpu host frequency (mhz) 334
PCI express frequencymhz 102
CIA2 disabled
System Memory Multiplier (spd) x2.4
Memory frequency mhz 800
System Voltage Control -Manual
DDR2 OverVoltage Control +0.3v
PCI-3 OVER vOLTAGE CONTROL -normal
(G)MCH Overvoltage control-normal
FSB Overvoltage control- +0.05v
CPU Voltage control- 1.35v
Normal CPU Vcore 1.35000v

That should get you to 3ghz without any problems. The main issue you were probably having was with the memory multiplier. keeping it on Auto was pushing the memory speed too high when you increased the CPU speed.

If you hit Ctrl and F1 together on the main BIOS screen you will unlock the memory timings. They will have magically appeared the next time you enter the overclocking menu. You can then set the first four timings to 4, 4, 4, 12 respectively. You can leave the other timings on auto.

If that doesn't work then keep upping the CPU Voltage Control until it does.

thanks again Im now working on this. everything is set as suggested DDR2overvoltage control is set (+0.300v) system memory multiplier is at 2.5 (wont go to 2.4). Going to do the rest now, then should I monitor a test overnight? Advise please. Great help thought it had beaten me! thanks jos

Ah i forgot the P965 Gigabytes don't have the x2.4 memory multiplier. x2.5 might be a little much for the Geil at 4-4-4-12, so leave the memory timings on Auto til you have the CPU overclock sorted out.

And I would run Orthos overnight.

Thanks Cob Ive put it on auto now Will I lstill leave the ddr2 overvoltage control at
+0.300v? j

Yip always leave it on +0.3v.

Try setting the memory multiplier to x2.5 and the memory timings to 4-4-4-12. If that doesn't wotk then set the memory timings to 5-5-5-15.

OOPS I just cant get the memory timings unlocked I have tried ctrl + f1 together but the timing control wont appear on screen any reason why?

Are you pressing them together on the main BIOS menu before entering the overclocking menu?

It did boot at 3ghz on auto but Cob, although I am pressing the 2 buttons together on main bios (then pressing f10 to exit) it will not show btw just ran coretemp and frequency is at 3006.04mhz (334.00x9.00) how good is that! temperature is 31c 28c
Any more wisdom!!

Yay :)

Don't exit the BIOS after hitting them together. They disappear again if you do that. Go straight into the overclocking menu after hitting them.

Yee hah!! got it this time! The ddr timing selectable (spd) was on auto and I have changed it to manual and the first 4 settings to 4-4-4-12 Now what???????

Problem -it took about 4 attempts to boot and then it booted but is now back to default! I feel a few swear words coming on!!!!any cure????

Yip.

Do all the settings again (some will have stayed the same, some will have returned to default), only this time use 5-5-5-12.

It's just the board auto-recovering after a bad overclock. Miles better than it not booting and having to manually reset the CMOS and start totally from scratch.
