I'm over 35 and get ID'd in Morrisons quite often. When I got asked if I was over 18 last week when buying a bottle of wine I replied "I'm at least double that". Cashier LOL'd.

OP - the reason they ask is that the business can get procecuted and fined if they sell prohibited substances to minor. 17/18 might be a huge deal to you at the moment, but really it doesn't matter at all.
