A official Armed Assault thread

In my experience cpu speed had very little impact on frame rates in ArmA, my fps remained the same at 1.8Ghz (stock) as it is at my clocked speeds of 2.8Ghz, graphics card on the other showed a minor increase in frame rate when overclocked so imho its a sure fire sign that arma is totally gpu dependant.

People that have 8800's and are getting flaky performance can be put down to several factors, the drivers just aint good enough yet or arma just hasnt yet been fully optimised for those cards. Game runs great for me, because i dont expect to have super crisp top notch totally imbalanced graphics. Hell i can play the game on its lowest possible settings and still have fun, doesnt have to look good to be good.

Yeah, really isn't playable on my 8800GTS - especially since installing Vista! The framerate does improve a fair bit if you alt-tab out and then back in again though.

I had to skip through the Dolores mission as it was just driving me beserk, but now I've clattered to halt during the night ambush mission. It's just a shame the AI and the missions are so 'flaky'. One random thing goes slightly pear shaped and the mission can simply fall apart. Of course there are occasional 'moments' that happen during a mission which are pure genuis, but even so... It also lacks the atmosphere of the previous OFP games, especially Resistance. This is a shame.
I've litereally just finished that mission after about 40 attempts. So many things kept going wrong: BMPs colliding and flipping over before they reached the bridge, vehicles driving into the river, vehicles falling off the bridge, etc. Like you said, if the AI cocks up just once like this, the entire mission falls apart and you have to start over.

I also agree with you about its lacking the atmosphere of OFP and resistance. There's absolutely no character development or persistence at all, which is disappointing.

That said, it's still a very good game, and these are mainly flaws in campaign, rather than core gameplay flaws, so they can be fixed by some dedicated work from the community.

I find the graphics to be fine, my self. They're certainly a refreshing change from OFP's. :)

Whats the multi player like ??
It's OK from what I can tell. The interface is much-improved. I think with a decent server and a decent group of people it will be great. The server I was on last night was ruined by 2 numpties though.

I only shot one person, they were driving a jeep and I was inside an office building. I'm sure I heard a gunshot from that grassy knoll too...

I'm glad I checked this thread before going out, as I was intending to buy this game today. I'm downloading the demo now, to see how it looks/plays.

How much difference is there (in performance) between the demo and the retail game?

Damn this game is unplayable on my 8800GTX @ high with medium AA and AF - I am using vista X64 though.

i have everthing bar two settings on normal, the other two on low at 1680x1050 (4xaa 4xaf) with a 8800gtx to get 30 fps

its well playable at this and still looks superb. im still messing about with settings in nvidia control panel. roll on patch 1.1 tho eh? ;)

Hehe, been playing the game since friday and I still love it!
Except i'm stuck on the 3/4 mission, the one where u have to sneak into an enemy base and blow up 4 tanks.
No matter what I do, I just can't do, manage to plant c4, and then destroy 2 tanks but by the time I get to the last 2, they shoot me :(
Still an awesome game though.

Remember to crawl without that tube on your back. Other then that, no idea. I'm stuck too.

I got my copy yesterday, installed ok, took a while to configure etc. Expected it to run like a bag of nails especially as my system is agp etc but seems to run ok, I have the setiings set as follows:- Quality pref-Very High /Visibility-4128 / Res 1280x1024 @ 75hz / Terrain detail-Normal / Objects Detail-Very High / Texture Detail-Very High / Shading Detail- Very High / Postprocess Effects-High / AS-Very High / Shadow Detail-High / AA-High / Blood-High. I don't Know what fps this is running at, but it is perfectly playable. I have only done the training missions so far but it was smooth even when flying (only the occasional V-brief pause).

Operation Flashpoint was one of my favourite games of all time but when I played the Demo for Armed Assault it really disappointed me, my specs aren’t very good but I was mostly disappointed with the game play than the graphics, seemed more like a mod for OFP than a sequel.

The two things that really annoyed me which I’m not sure if it was just because of my **** PC, was when you load and unload the map during a game it takes a couple of seconds and isn’t instant which is extremely annoying and also it still goes really gay when you try to move about in towers. Is this just me or was it like that for other people?

Yeah, when it starts playing 'YMCA' and the enemy soldiers take all their clothes off and start dancing, that really is quite annoying... ;)

Played the first level last night and cant see any thing that makes it that different from ofp, so for any who has played ofp and doesnt like this game i think its got something to do with the amount of time thats past since ofp was released.

I see some of the bugs from ofp made into the game as well :(

Heres something for those of us who haven't upgraded recently and won't get that great performance from Armed Assault.

I re-installed Op Flashpoint and added this mod:
http://ffur.net/ofp/

looks pretty good, it'll do me until I upgrade to Vista/DX 10 later this year :)

I picked up my copy the day it came out as I loved OFP- we used to play weekend-long LAN parties at my place with up to 8 players, it really was one of the best realism-based Multiplayer wargames around. There were so many downloadable excellent missions- some of the maps where we had big coop multiplayer skirmishes are etched in my memory as almost "real" places- usually the sign of a decent game.

Unfortunately I didn't have a chance over the weekend to install Arma, and in the meantime was reading this and other forums and expecting the worst.

Well I'm happy to say I am well pleased with it. My system's a 2.6Ghz dual core Opteron, 2Gb RAM and a 7950GX2. Not bleeding edge any more, and yet I've whacked all the graphical options up to max except shadows (medium) and AA (high), and the draw distance to 7km and it runs like a dream- no crashes, no graphical artifacts (although the graphics went mad on my second PC- P4 2.8, 1GB, 9600XT), no noticeable slowdown.

I seem to remember lots of mission based issues on OFP- triggers not occurring, soldiers ignoring orders etc, but to be honest the community-created missions came out very quickly (including fixed and improved versions of the standard missions), and were in many cases, far superior to the included campaign, so personally I'm not that bothered.

If you're not sure, play the demo and maybe wait for a few patch releases before taking the plunge. Sure it's a very odd game to play in terms of controls, but for me it didn't take long for the OFP skills to come back. If you liked OFP, get this, it's the same game brought into the 21st century, and if the community content is of the same scale as OFP's, we're going to be playing it for a long time to come.
