Hi all, looking to upgrade to an Intel i7 3770k CPU & Asus Sabertooth Z77 mobo and I will be buying a large 256gb SSD as my system drive c: . I have 2 x 1tb h/drives that I am keeping but want to make faster. Do I need to buy 2 x say 60gb SSD's to make them both faster or do I buy say a 120gb SSD and split it between the two HD's?

Why don't you just partition the 256gb SSD.. say 128gb for OS and apps.. then the remaining partition for games. The traditional hard drive can be used for media and file storage only.

As far as I know, if setup this way, then caching is already installed and activated. I could be wrong but this was my understanding.

Intel SMART caching is something different. This allows the OS to be installed on the HDD but set up it's cache on a small SSD for a perfomance boost. This was of benefit when SSDs where larger SSDs where quite expensive and offered a cheaper SSD solution. This isn't required when the OS is installed on the SSD and is practically a redundant feature since larger SSD prices have been driven down of late.

Wont be enough, my steam foler alone is near 300gb in size! I have one of my 1tb h/d nearly full of games.

The 256gb SSD will be for my OS, apps, docs & music... should be fine.

The remaining 2 x H/D's will be used for storage/games. Im not sure of this new tech and if I will need to use one SSD on each HD?

tbh I have a 128gb SSD. 50GB is for the OS and apps and the remaining for Steam and Origin. I only have installed what I'm currently playing. I have about 4 games currently installed at the moment and still some space spare.

That said, your solution to install Steam and or Origin on the tradition HDD drive partition won't trouble you too much.. Load times will be a bit slower though.

I'm not sure you can split Steam installs over different partitions which would be useful? Not something I've looked into but if you could, you could but the least favourable/played games in the HDD partition.

you could upgrade your 1tb hdd's for one 3tb hdd and buy a small 60gb ssd and use it for caching?? that would be the simplest/cheapest option, then you wouldnt have to worry about ssd space

*grin* I have done just that. I have purchased a 3tb 6gb/s HD and a 120gb Corsair GT SSD to pair with the HD as my D: drive(storage).

I read somewhere that your not restricted to a 60bg drive as ASUS uses its own system of SRT?

I have ordered the 360gb Corsair GT SSD for my C: drive.

im not sure on that, anyway you can just make a 60gb partition for caching and use the other 60gb as free space for whatever you want on it

I'm using an Asus Gene-Z lV with SRT. No idea about the ASUS-only thing.

I have 60GB of my 256GB M4 as cache (infront of a RAID1), and use the remainder as normal SSD storage - try to leave some free space so it can keep itself tidy.

Well, I read wrong. the 120gb was partitioned... a 64gb cache drive, the rest I can use for something else! :)

I use a 60GB Agility 3 to cache a 2TB games drive and it works really well with noticeable differences. Well worth doing tbh.
