I'm fed up of sites telling me to "upgrade to Firefox."

"This site views best in Firefox."

"Internet Explorer doesn't show this site properly - use Firefox. It's Free!"

NO! **** off.

Stop being lazy and code your site to work cross-platform.

Better yet, get off your anti-Microsoft high horse and accept that IE7 is a bloody good browser, and was better (imho) than FF2.

Besides, Opera is better than Firefox (imho).... so **** off!

I instantly leave the site if I see these. It reminds me of the "site best viewed at 1024x768". No site is ever important enough to dictate how I should view it.

"User must stand on one leg stroking a ginger cat to best view this page."

That's probably because the site is best viewed in Firefox or another standards based browser. Because the designer has made use of CSS that isn't available in IE6 or 7.

And if IE7 was so good Microsoft wouldn't be making such a radical change going to IE8.

Or how about Microsoft start adhering to industry wide standards and stop web developers from jumping through hoops to support Internet Explorer. It's not anti-Microsoft but rather pro-standards. If you have ever developed for the web you will understand how much more difficult it is because of the need to support IE.

Developers waste countless hours needlessly, which is why they encourage internet users to switch to a standards compliant browser. I don't see how that is a problem for you. If you leave pages because of this then more fool on you.

IE7 is not a better browser than FF. Standards compliance? Ha!

Anything other than standards is preference. Personally, I hate IE7. Where's the menu bar gone? Why get rid? It hasn't saved space because of the HUGE tab bar..

Microsoft seem to have gone on a menu bar hiding spree in Vista too. Fortunately, pressing alt brings them back up.

Wow... now you know how I feel/felt about many many professional sites about 2-3 years ago.

FF has followed standards much more closely than IE. Its sad but its the truth. If you don't like FF, try opera/safari/one of the others.

Would you drive on a road that said for x users only?

I don't like being told what to do.
Terrible analogy that doesn't equate one bit...

Seriously, you read on a website...

"This site views best in Firefox."

"Internet Explorer doesn't show this site properly - use Firefox. It's Free!"

... and you feel anger and shout at your computer? They're telling you that you will enjoy a better experience if you use a standards compliant browser.

I don't like being told what to do!What about when you see web adverting telling you to buy their brand. Spend a lot of time ranting?

I can honestly understand showing a brief message to IE6 users (if it's not a professional website) but not IE7. Many IE6 users (across our 226 websites, usage is still at 20%) just don't know better and kind of need a gentle nudge.

Personally, I've just started doing my little part by giving FF, Opera, IE7, etc. some extra eye candy and I'm certainly not the only one doing it. People don't like to miss out on anything so this gives them a reason to consider trying something different.

The next revision of my own personal website will be a little worse though. Anything less than IE7 will have all the CSS removed so will only see plain text and images.

Couldn't agree more!

I want all the hours back that I have wasted of my life making things work for IE6 / IE7.

Actually... I own the domain "Whyinternetexplorerisblocked.com" maybe I should put up a little page for people to link to...

With a picture of a kitten being beaten with a stick.
