A smart device that supports Amazon, Netflix + Now TV

The main Problem with the Rokus is that the UI is crap. The UI is much better and far more responsive on my LG B6 thant it ever was on my Roku 3.

yes no problems with the UI -
OK if the B6 is controlled by telepathy, I concede it could be faster.

Thanks. I'd kind of expect Now TV to be quick given they use the Roku software. I'd also expect Netflix to be quick as its pretty good on every hardware I've seen it on. However I'm not sure about Amazon....if you get the chance, could you do a quick vid of navigating from Home -> Amazon -> Video (assuming you have stuff you can watch there for free/already paid for).

Thanks again.

I've got all them apps on my B6 oled, but I use a Nvidia 2017 shield which runs them all much better. Very good for Kodi as well. By far the best (and most powerful) streamer out there. Excellent bit of kit.

... nowtv's the cheapest, contents on par, so that is a pity if its not on the shield

UI for Amazon on roku seems just as fast

stupid netflix will not show you their catalogue unless you subscribe/start-trial

can also miracast desktop to roku too, per earlier thread, but did not get round to installing the win7 drivers

fwiw There is an argos deal on 3months entertainment nowtv at £12.45

Moreover Chromeccast Ultra - seem to be a couple of deals too for £54.
However checking up to see if the Ultra really supports Nowtv, draws a blank from google forums
(the google support looks just as bad as some of the inane comments from microsoft personnel/experts)
so I guess I am out, support comment is from last last year but I could not find better, could send it back to JL if it fails I guess.

The website for the Chromecast ultra (UK) clearly shows Now TV as supported, there is even a Now TV logo on the box. Yet this latest model does not work, the older ones do. I suspect an app update of some sort will be required.

Hi Big Chickers,

If this issue is isolated to Now TV, please reach out to their support team directly for further assistance with your concerns.

Thanks in advance,
Christina

edit the ultra apps list
neither nowtv nor itv are available for windows, just android/apple

A quick skim of this seems to point me in the direction of a Roku 2 with the faster processor.

Need something for Amazon, Netflix, iPlayer and to have the option of stuff like NowTV and potentially some media server shenanigans later down the line.

Yay or Nay? I’m in the US later this month so could pick something up there if there’s something we don’t get over here.

The USA 4K rokus don't support Iplayer (I linked that in an earlier thread), and I wonder if the older faster roku2/3, if still available, will.

But if the price is right on a 4K roku could be tempting, since even if you do not have a 4k tv will decode h265 unlike its predecessor. ?

We have a UK Roku 3 and a US Roku Streaming Stick.

The Roku 3 works fine with everything we use it for, which is mainly the TV catch up services and Plex as well as NHL TV. Never been laggy for either of them.

The US Roku Streaming stick is a better spec than the one we get over here, again all works fine apart from iPlayer as the BBC maintain a list of 'approved' devices where they can guarantee stuff will work.

There are other ways to get iPlayer on the US spec devices, for instance adding it as a channel within Plex works just fine.

I'm tempted to bring back one of the newer Ultra boxes to take advantage of h265 decoding as at the moment everything gets transcoded through Plex, be nice to have it working direct.

Just to bump this slightly, looks like Roku are bringing some of their newer devices to the UK, the Express and new Streaming Stick+.

Shame no Ultra, but to be honest the Stick+ could be a good replacement for the Roku 3 with it's beefier specs, if you don't need ethernet or any other connectivity.

Means it'll hopefully get iPlayer support so I can swap my US Streaming Stick and Roku 3 both for them :)
