A Song Of Fire And Ice Books Appreciation Thread *Spoiler Tags Please*

Now on part 2 of book 3 and at the part where the wedding happens.

I was actually quite surprised that Catelyn was killed, she's been a prominent character since the start. A very good character to kill off if he was trying to make an impact. Wasn't bothered too much by Robb's death as I expected it a little. Poor little Arya though she just doesn't have luck on her side.

Things have dragged quite a bit since part way through A Clash of Kings but for me in book 3 part 2 things have really picked up and some long running quetions answered for me.

The Hound has become my favorite character now.

Bump this just to say that I am re-reading atm, and I finished ASOS last night(read the book in 3 days:p). I am really enjoying it.

Finding a lot of appreciation for characters I previously didn't get(Varys is incredible!...pretty much everything he says has a double meaning) and also realising that some characters aren't quite as 'good' as I remember them being(Tyrion for example). Also knowing what I know now, I am paying close attention to 2 characters who I have come to believe are pivotal to the whole thing- Patchface and Mormont's Raven;)

This series HAS to be re-read as there is just so much that you didn't notice the first time round!

BTW, there was a new Winds of Winter chapter released the other day...an Arianne chapter

I finished the final currently released book in the series at the weekend, having been reading slowly but surely since June (when I devoured the first book in a week on Holiday).

It's quite simply the best series of books I've ever read. It has given me a huge reminding incentive to read in general, and to read epic fantasy in particular.

The series is also great, but there are simply not enough superlatives for the books.

GRRM is a genius.

I'm not sure about the Raven, but I think Patchface will certainly play a bigger role than he currently does.

****ed off about Jon Snow though, all that time developing him and his plan for the north, only for him to die so suddenly. I expected him to get a lot of hassle but not death, he shouldn't have strayed from his dire wolf. He was one of my favourite characters

On that note I'm somewhat confused about the starks and the dire wolfs. The only starks that have died, died because they separated themselves willingly from their wolves who would have otherwise warned them about the imminent danger. Yet now the ones that are alive are all the dogs without their wolves (except bran, but he seems pretty safe underground and only survived north of the wall because of the wolf).

No way is Jon dead!*... -GRRM when asked about Jon Snow- "Oh, you think he's dead do you?"

And the raven is clearly being warged by someone...almost certainly Bloodraven, but Benjen is a possibility imo. I have ruled out Bran though. I am paying careful attention to the Raven, and I am in no doubt whatsoever!

*or more specifically, I believe he is dead, but will come back

In my view, it's pretty clear that Jon Snow ain't dying. Not in the conventional sense anyway... *cough* Stoneheart *cough* Berric Dondarrion *cough*

After all, there is no one on the wall who could possibly out 'Lord of Light' Thoros of Myr? Is there? ;)

GRRM never puts anything in there for no reason.....think back to the Varamyr prologue to ADWD which is all about warging, and how he wargs in to an animal(I forget which) when he is just about to die....then read what Jon was thinking of as he was being stabbed;)

Agree with you - I'm just hoping that isn't the case because it would really **** me off!

I tried reading GoT on my HTC Desire via Kindle but never really got in to it. So I just found A Song of Fire and Ice (Game of Thrones), 7 Book Collectible Box Set with Westeros & Free Cities Poster Map on a book store website, brand new for £28.99 and then found a 13% off code so got the whole lot for £25.22 + 99p delivery

Jon isn't dead.

He's the special bloke that is foretold. Read the chapters about him from Stannis' witch ***** where she is saying "all I can see is Snow" the capital being there on purpose.

Theres loads going round but he's there for good, I was surprised GRRM knifed him in the first place TBH.

There is also Melisandre's vision of Jon Snow where she sees him turning from 'man to wolf, then back to man' or something. I think his body is dead, but his mind is inside Ghost(which will protect it in a way in which Cat's and Beric's were not), so he will spend the first half of the book inside Ghost probably either traveling to Bran and Bloodraven(there are hints that Ghost has already been to that cave), or going to Winterfell, where he will learn about his real parents. They will then burn Jon's body at the wall(in a scene very similar to Dany's at the end of AGOT), and as it is burning Ghost will appear and Jon will return to his body...you never know, possibly pulling a burning sword out of the fire;)

That is what I think will happen anyway.

Was a little surprised at Jon being stabbed also. But assumed him being quite important character he won't die. What you guys suggest seems very plausible. Really can't wait for the next book. Currently reading lotr to fill some of the space.

Finished AFFC last night....Storming through them! I actually skipped a few Brienne chapters and one Cersei chapter.

I just love the scene between Jaime and Blackfish.

I am still undecided on Jeyne though, there is a theory that she was switched and she was pregant, but I don't think I believe that tbh. I am not sure we will see her again.

Gonna start ADWD tomorrow night.

I finished A Dance with Dragons Part II a few nights ago :(

Looks like the next book is only 2015. I want it now! Amazing series of books. I'll definitely be reading through them again at some point.

I promise you a re-read is essential. There is so much you missed the first time!...and so many theories about the books, as pretty much everything is open to interpretation.

I reread the whole set recently, and yes, there's stuff you miss first time. I completely missed the grave digger (or at least, the relevance) in AFFC for example. It's also much clearer how much Martin's writing style has changed since the series started, as he gets a better idea of how the stories should flow.

Also , heretic that I am, I have to say that Crows is my favourite overall. SoS has the best individual moments ("Is there gold in the village?"), but I still like AFFC the most overall. Mainly for reasons others don't like it: the people it doesn't cover are people I don't care about (Tyrion is over-rated), and for the more relaxed pace, as people catch their breath.

Oh, even though I consider Feast the weakest(by some way) I still love it. Brienne's chapters are painfully boring to read imo.

I missed pretty much everything on my first read tbh!

The only 'theory' that I did notice before being told about it was 'Frey Pies'....oh and Jon's parents, which I don't even consider up for debate tbh

I have been reading the forums for a good few years and have been convinced about quite a few things that I never would have even thought of tbh.

Feast and Dance are the weakest books storywise but are the most well written imo. I'm hoping that they are setting the scene for an action packed conclusion to the series but tbh the sample chapters released for Winds indicate that GRRM will continue with the slow pace of the last two. With that in mind, I really can't see him finishing in 7 books and the show will almost certainly finish before him.

Regarding Jon:

The Varamyr prologue says that Ghost would be a second life fit for a king (he has 3 "crowns" effectively) and with mel's man-wolf-man vision, its pretty clear to me that he'll be spending some time in Ghost before he gets back into his body.

I quite like the idea that Mel burns his body and sacrifices Marsh and co at the same time and he rises from that. It would mirror Dany in AGoT. I like it better than cold-hands Jon or unJon anyway.
