A Song Of Fire And Ice Books Appreciation Thread *Spoiler Tags Please*

Finished AFFC last night....Storming through them! it is the worst of the series though by a mile. I actually skipped a few Brienne chapters and one Cersei chapter.

I just love the scene between Jaime and Blackfish.

I am still undecided on Jeyne though, there is a theory that she was switched and she was pregant, but I don't think I believe that tbh. I am not sure we will see her again.

Gonna start ADWD tomorrow night.

Apparently there is a mismatch in her physical descriptions, which gives rise to the pregnancy theory

Martin makes continuity mistakes. He admits contacting the fan club to try to remember what he wrote about things in previous books, but other things still get through. I spotted one between books three and four. A trivial one, but I does mean that you can't read meaning into everything.

When Jaime finds out in book four that the Hound was at the inn (end of book three), Raff tells him that the Hound was said by the inn staff to be with a scruffy boy. But in book three Clegane says out loud that he wants a second glass of wine for the girl.

Never read any of the Dunk, hoping/expecting a collected edition at some point.

I'm wondering what will happen with Arya, we all know who she wants to kill but I can't see her doing it as she is bound to the rules. Unless of course she goes rogue which could always happen and cause some right up mayhem :D

But they have reeled her in a few times already iirc, I expect she probably will go rogue but would seem a little against the story they have built up around it all (IMO anyway :p)

Just finished the last Arya chapter in book five (have any more been released?). She's god damn incredible! I mean, I knew when Martin said the insurance man tasted every coin how he would be killed but I just love the ferocity this little wolf has. I just hope Martin allows her to live throughout the series. Her path is obviously destined to cross many people from her past, I can't wait.

Arya is the only character with a pov in every book, clearly the rest of the characters are just there to make all the backstory and allow the story of Arya to be the most enriched story there has ever been.

I understand why a lot of people are disappointed by the way Martin has taken the later books. But it would have been impossible to keep up the fast paced, intricate work of the first few volumes... nobody's that good. :-)

Still, for me the series develops in a rather satisfying -- if a little long winded -- way. So a few characters really start to shine, and when the critical chapters arrive, they're more welcome and enjoyable because they're so rare.

As you say, Martin only has two jobs. One, stay alive! Two, keep writing. I can't bear the thought of Sanderson being brought in to finish this project off as well. :-)

On a related note, I'm now struggling to resist the fact HBO content is now available on the Play store. I wanted to wait for the DVD release of series three and watch them all again. But now series 3 is only a click away!

This thread promoted me to read up a little for an update on the next book, earliest is now 2015 possibly as late as 2017 release.

FU George, FU! There is definitely another Jordan incoming when you see the state of the old, obese man he is. :(

Look at it this way, if eating all the pies gave us what we've already had, then that's the way things have to be. It's as much a part of the man as his writing, and I know enough about creative acts to know just how hard it is to write compellingly over multiple paragraphs, let alone massive books... And how easy it is to reach for the biscuit jar while sat at a desk for hours, let alone decades.

Of course we all know endings are inevitably disappointing. So if we never quite see the end of this tale, the journey has been amazing and worthwhile. So has the Tv series, and I think it'd be elements from that team which could, if required, tailor a satisfactory ending.

I read somewhere, I don't know if it's true and I can't be bothered to source it, but if he does die he has forbidden anyone to finish the story for him, only the tv show will be allowed to end it and the producers know the core of how it ends. It will suck to have the story ended by televisions. As much as I love the HBO show it's pants compared to the books.

That's to blame for all the Food porn!:p

I just hope he forgets about the the TV show completely.

Yer, I wondered if maybe he would alter his writing style to fit the TV show. But GoT HBO show is not his first foray into script writing so hopefully that won't alter it. I read a post by someone somewhere else that basically said, 'the TV show is made to a budget, I don't want to read a book made to a budget.'
