England’s most powerful man 09/06/13
Having decided to compete at the last minute I hadn’t tapered my training for today’s comp, so woke up feeling stiff from Friday’s events training. The 90 minute car journey to Gravesend did little to help the situation!
After catching up with fellow competitors and watching some of the u105 comp I did a good 20 minutes of general warm up to help loosen off.
Feeling better I started to warm up specifically for the first event, 140KG log.
Event 1 – 140KG log for reps (in 60 seconds)
I was up against Tristan O’Brien (South Africa’s strongest man) the warm up had been okay, just a little unstable and no where near as convincing as Tristans! The current leader had done 3 reps. I’d be confident of 4-5 reps on a good day, I wasn’t convinced today was such a day!
The adrenaline and competitive spirit kicked in and the log felt lighter than it had 10 minutes ago during the warm up. I paced myself well and managed to surprise myself with 6 reps, enough to beat both Tristan and Rob Frampton who both netted 5 reps. 1st place.
Event 2 – 400KG yoke (20m)
I was last to go, most of the field had already completed the full course, some of which in very fast times. The 20m course was on grass, slightly uneven in places. I did what I thought was a safe and steady run, it was mistake free which was the aim given the terrain. It turned out to be faster than I thought, in fact it was 0.08 seconds behind the event leader. 2nd place
Event 3 – 300KG deadlift for reps (in 60 seconds)
Conventional deadlift, no suits, belt and straps only. Two people had done 6 reps, so the target was 7. Had I been fresh and lifting in the gym I would have been confident at this stage, however it was on grass and I wasn’t fresh! The first rep felt heavy, luckily the next 6 felt similar. I did the required 7 reps, I’d like to think I had 1 or 2 more in the tank but was glad I didn’t need to put that to the test. 1st place
Event 4 – 152KG farmers walk (20m)
I was in the last pairing with Tristan, I had a 3.5 point lead at this stage. My grip has cost me in my last 2 competitions, I’ve trained it hard recently but still have a lot of work to do. I knew that I’d be fast if I could just hold onto the farmers! Luckily my grip held, however Tristan matched me every step of the way, we both finished in ~11 seconds. I did just enough to hold him off and took the event win by a 0.5 second margin to extend my lead.
Event 5 – 80KG dumbbell for reps (in 60 seconds)
One of the reasons I chose to compete today, dumbbell is one of my favorite events. Again, last to go after my victory in the farmers, I knew that 8 reps were required to beat the big South African. I tend to like the events I’m best at, I managed an easy 8 reps to justify the dumbbell being one of my favorites! 1st place
Event 6 – Loading medley (120KG sack, 130KG keg, 160KG log)
With a 5.5 point margin between me and 2nd place I knew that I just needed to avoid any silly mistakes to take the overall win and the title. Only Tristan had loaded all 3 items, I knew that a fast 2 would be enough. I did the fast 2 and decided to make it a fast 3 and took the event win.
A great battle between me and Tristan all afternoon, we were pretty much 1st and 2nd in every event. Some other awesome performances from Dan Gracia to take the 3rd podium spot, and Harri who’d flown over from Finland to compete who took 4th.
Really pleased with today’s result, a few days recovery before I decide whether to compete again next weekend!
