A trip to the dentist, NHS where art thou

Erm, that's almost exactly how it works now. GPs and Dentists are private businesses, paid by the Govt/NHS for treatment they provide.

No - currently those who cant be bothered to brush their teeth are rewarded with capped charges for as much work as is necessary - this is wrong.

Unless you're desperate I'd really reconsider using NHS dentistry if you have the means to pay for private.
NHS simply doesnt pay the dentists enough for good care to be possible.
And considering the impact teeth problems can have on your life, getting the absolute cheapest rushed job is crazy if you have the choice.

Many don't, & I don't know the answer to that.

Yeah, ironically I was private with a specialist dental surgeon, my wife/kids managed to get in as NHS patients with the same surgery, but they wouldn't transfer me over!

I think they need to do something to ensure people are more likely to keep going and getting their teeth sorted!

I had an nhs dentist, but they never answered the phone, and booted me of their list for not going for a while, i.e. while they were closed during covid.

Got a private one now, best dentist I've ever had, so I'm not too salty about paying for it.

I don't see a way back from here tbh, may as well just admit we don't have nhs dentistry - coz the real crime is I'm paying twice for dentistry.

Can't even get a private dentist where I currently am. I'm terrified to tell my current NHS/Private one I moved house in case they take me off the books. I drive 45 mins to get there.
Same here mate 25min drive for me, they contacted me for a checkup which I believe kept me on as NHS haha

Remind me... why do we pay tax again can't get a Dr's appt, can't get a dentist appt... police and fire brigade.. not used them once in 20 year

Doesn't seem like I get treated any differently to the private people where I go, although I'm sure there are treatments not covered by the NHS that you might be offered when your paying.

most people should take out a dental plan whilst their teeth are good, probably not much more than most peoples phone contracts

that happened to me, booted for inactivity but the gits counted covid lockdown and an appointment that they cancelled on me as inactivity time.
I was furious but apparently they do what they want.

You need to have a reserve fund for this type of stuff & surgeries with at least 20k in it... like a savings account.

You should also pay for routine screening every 1 or 2 years... too many people getting ill these days and finding out when it's too late.

Don't rely on NHS.

I don't know about shortage of dentists there no shortage of surgeries apparently there are two within walking distance of here one has been private for years the other was some weird run down place that got sold or taken over by new practitioners who gutted the place and rebuilt it in a modern style and as a result were taking on new NHS patients presumably to build up the business and thats where I got in they've since stopped taking on new and I'm dreading the inevitable "we're no longer treating NHS patients" letter/text.

Where are these people going or what the hell are they doing to their teeth? Mine is 200 ish for a filling and £600 for a route canal. That is top whack.

To spend 3 and a half grand you are looking at 3 root canals and 5-6 fillings!
Search me I don't eat sweets and I don't eat sugar other than whats in the food already I don't have a bag of sugar in the place and havn't for many years and still my teeth are decaying had two smallish fillings in my front teeth last visit and one in a rear tooth fell out a while ago and it intermittently gives me a good deal of pain so something major is likely to need doing next month my next regular checkup. I've also had two teeth extracted due to the them breaking in half and the filling falling out in the process I thought they'd crown them but nope out they must come they said.

I tried everywhere to get an NHS dentist but had to go private with a cracked tooth, they ended up pulling 2 teeth and having 3 fillings for a princely sum of £730

It seems you either pay through the nose or just live in constant pain nowadays I bet some people are having some right horror stories! I dread to think, I'm lucky I can afford it
I had to go private as well after about 10 years of not having been to the dentist after a bad root canal experience. I had to have 3 teeth extracted and I filling. In total it cost me about £180 as the teeth pulls were done after they referred me to an NHS specialist that had zero cost assigned to it.

Not many, and it would only be for more affluent areas to make it viable.

You would get little custom if you were in a deprived area and didn't offer the "free" funded hours.

But no one is forced to take the free hours, 413x was saying that private companies should be force to take on government work it a lower price or be force to close.

And you say not many but loads in London do not take the free hours.

How is this still happening when the NHS is receiving an extra £350 million per week thanks to Brexit?
