a very quick x6

Without getting into Matt82's tuning debacle, these big BMWs are stupidly quick.
Our 535i GT is over 2 tonnes, yet still reaches 62 in the same time as my Z3 (6s).
The 535d is even quicker (under 6s IIRC) and once on the move it's ridiculous.

It didn't take very long at all to do 0-110 mph, albeit in an F10 Touring.

Either way, this new range of BMW turbo engines (both petrol and diesel) are nothing short of phenomenal, especially when you realise these cars are weighing in at 2 tonnes.

FWIW, I don't think your Golf is as quick as you're making it out to be. And I presume that '140' was indicated?

I don't think it's so much the engines but rather the new 8-speed gearbox BMW are putting in these now. The one in the 535dGT was incredible and I'd wager it would shave 1s+ off any timings against the old 6-speed item.
With so many gears to choose from, it's always in the right one

BMW have not offered a 3.5 litre engine since the 735i almost 10 years ago.
The E39 outlasted the E38 so technically it still would have been available in the 535i in 2003 ;)

nah, rev counter and knowing the gearing
Dude

I thought you had a 530dGT, or did you have a play in a 535 too?
That gearbox is excellent though, so you have a point.
The F10 535d does 0-62 in 5.7 or something equally ridiculous.

I see. So why are they called x35i then?

Is the Z4 8 speed too?
All the BMW petrol and diesels in x25/x28/x30/x35/x40 form are three litres. They need different names to distinguish themselves. It's a logical system, but these days it just doesn't refer to engine capacity. Much like with Mercedes.

Wow, no matter what forum you go to there's always these sort of arguments

Guy in a Golf GTi was behind me today egging me on round the A406... Now, as I came up to the A12 I was pulling off so I shot forward a bit and pulled in. Of course now he carried on foot down well off into the distance.

Somewhere, in some forum on t'internet, there's some guy going on about how his 2008 Golf GTi 'Totally wasted' an e92 M3 on the A406 today.

The difference in perceived performance is affected a lot by your view of the world though - I.e. where you're sitting. A few years ago a number of us from another forum went for a little drive around Buxton - me in my heavily mod'ed RS4 (running about 450Bhp, dyno verified) and others in S3s, some S4s.

My perception was that while I was a bit faster on the runs then the S3/S4s of this world there wasn't much in it. Mate's perception (backed up by video) was that everytime I floored it I just shot off.

Same thing, just two massively different perceptions.

I don't for 8 seconds believe that a mod'ed 150 golf can do an 8 sec 60 to 100. Even if you used the video to 'time' it you'd have to take into account the over-read on the speedo or use a GPS. I'm just not buying it.

BMW have two 3.0 litre 6 cylinder engines in the range.

One is N/A, the other turbocharged. One is called 335i (in the 3 series) or 35i (in the z4).

The other is called the 330i / 30i to differentiate them. The 330i / 30i is N/A the 335i / 35i are Turbo

Suppose a 'T' would ruin their naming system...

No. Conventional 6 speed auto, or 7 speed DCT on the SDrive35i or SDrive35iS.

Must be seriously quick! Is there a Z4M in the pipeline? Vaguely remember reading something about it being canceled?

I think you'll find BMW have a lot more than two 3.0 6 cylinder engines in their range :)
