A winter warning thread.......

Don't think British weather ever gets cold enough for me to start worrying about the engine freezing, but I'm much more concerned with coming a cropper on icy roads.

Its the water that freezes not the engine.

It often hits below 0C at winter

It snowed a little here in Aberdeen last night, me being fully prepared had left all my "car stuff" in the shed at parents house, so didn't have any de-icer/a sound method to scrape ice off windscreen...
Took about 15 minutes to clear both front and back with the "use your hands" approach... :(

you should have just poured hot water on it...

:p

Got my new glow plugs in thanks to recent problems with the colder weather. With old cars like mine there isn't much you can do. If everything is working correctly you get no problems, if it isn't be prepared for stuttering starts first thing in the morning

Yes, I kinda figured.

And even the most dilute anti-freeze mix offers protection down to past -15 degrees or something, which is why I wont worry.

Yep, I am using a 1:3 mix and thats fine for around -15 apparently. Costs next to nothing compared to what it could do.

Rather not get ice in my coolant channels, afterall ice is less dense than water. :o

Checked mine properly today with my level, supposed to be a 50:50 mix, practically nil antifreeze in it (partly what inspired this thread, as I was concious about it being off).

Was registering some mix on the scale but not a definitive amount, so really no good.

Topped up nicely now :)

Think I'll do a full coolant flush soon when I get back though, condition of the existing stuff is a bit marginal. Then again, I am intolerably picky about things like that :D

Thanks for the warning. After doing some engine work I currently just have neat water in there to flush the engine through but I will get it flushed and put some anti-freeze and distilled water in there as soon as I get chance.

I doubt it will get cold enough down in Southampton to cause any damage but you can't be too careful.

Even if it doesn't get cold enough it's worth putting it in for the anti-corosion properties the anti-freeze also has :)

Yes, that's the one :)

Your coolant is composed of (preferably distilled) water and antifreeze mixed together, to create the correct ratio. It'll tell you in your handbook what it should be :)

My little car has a nice garage to keep warm in.. I'm more worried about the slippery roads.

Whats the MR2 really like on the wintery roads? Bet it must be.....interesting? ;).

I remember, from last year, those heart stopping moments, when your steering just goes light. :\

I must admit though, i do like it when it snows and gives that little bit more excitment when driving :)*

*Of course, if i ever go off the road in snow my views may be subject to change.
