Abcess - Warning and a bit if info needed!

you mean a BOIL...

magnesium sulphate will draw all the puss to the surface you can get it from your local chemist.

anywya if it was in your lower back and you know have a hole the size of a tennis ball theres a name for it but i cant remember what it is, can take months to heal

Nope, an abcess. It was inside, no head to be seen, just a huge lump right under the skin!

Ouch....

Buttock crease? Are we talking between buttock and top of leg or..... somewhere else?

As in the top of my arse crack, on the left hand side.

Some funny replies in here actually! Makes me feel a bit happier!
And for the record, I am very hairy :p

You could always use this opportunity to perfect the art of walking on your hands. Not only do you master a really useful and cool skill, but you also get drug free pain relief !

i remember when i was 14 i had a paper round and (even though i'm not overweight and was in very good shape back then) the trousers would rub on the inside of my upper leg as i rode my bike and rub all the hairs off the inside and would often turn into boils or absesses mostly small but some would be quite large. they were not nice to look at, at all and some would become quite painful to the point of having to put a plaster on them to be able to walk properly. i can only assume i grew out of them though but i do remember them being particularly unpleasent.

This thread is absolutely fine without pics.

In related news, my wife had some kind of boil on her back a few years back, it must have been caused by an ingrown hair or something. It was fairly flush with the skin, but was incredibly sore. Unfortunately, she was pregnant when it really started to bother her, so they couldn't slice it open or anything, as the risk of septicaemia is too great and that would probably kill the baby. After a while it get weepy and gross and I had to clean it with hot water and whatnot, and press it a bit to get all the gunk out... Gross. Sometimes it came out thin and watery, other times it was like cottage cheese, and it always, always smelt like absolute death and made me want to hurl. It was quite violent coming out sometimes, too. One time it was a bit troublesome getting some of the gunk out, and when it finally came out I swear a jet of putrid filth hit the ceiling. Mercifully, it calmed down after that, so I must have got the core of it out.

what the op may have had is a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilonidal_cyst ? very nasty

Yeah i had this, starting hurting for a few days, then one day i went into work and could barely stand from the pain :D.

Went to hospital and had surgery a few hours later, first time they changed the aquacel stuff it was about 2 foot long :(.

Still, after the first time it wasn't that bad getting it changed, getting it out was basically painless in the shower, and getting it put in was only 30 secs or so of discomfort.

I'm glad i just ignored it and then went to hospital tho, since my sisters had them a few times and went to the doctors early to get anti-biotics, but they kept coming back until she ended up having to have surgery (altho to be fair she's pretty bad at taking the whole course of anti-biotics :p). Was much easier just going to hospital then having a few weeks off work :p.

Edit - Sorry, just read the rest of the OP

I had mine packed for about 3 weeks iirc :p. The amount of pain caused by packing goes down massivly after the second day tho :).

Before the nurse comes round in the morning, take some painkillers, and have a shower, the packing comes out very easily in the shower, and is virtually painless (if abit of a weird feeling).

I'd imagine the amount of time you have to get it packed for varies a lot, depending on how deep they had to cut in order to remove everything, so yours might not need done for aslong as mine :p.

Not looking for advice AT ALL. I already have medical advice.

Firstly a warning, have you suffered from an abcess on any part of your body caused by an ingrowing hair or infection? If so, did you leave it be or seek medical attention?

Personally, I have suffered from small ones for years. Ones which when they got the size of a pea, went red raw, or just generally became painful I would go to the doctors for a course of antibiotics to clear them up.

I thought this one was the same! Late on thursday, my buttock crease was feeling a bit sore, felt like a little abcess was forming. Didn't think much of it. By saturday it was starting to be painful. Went to a walk-in centre on sunday and they prescribed anti-biotics. It was becoming v difficult to walk or drive. Sitting was painful as well! Drugs hadn't done a thing by tuesday, and was in incredible pain after waking up. Went to hospital Tuesday as advised by doctor.
Needless to say, I just got out! Was knocked out, and had it drained. I am currently quite happy on some nice painkillers!

This is the painful bit: I thought that the abcess was bad (Which ended up 1/2-3/4 the size of a ping pong ball in 3 days), this is nothing compared to having the first dressing changed today. They had packed it with Aquacel. This is the single most painful thing I have EVER had happen to me. Both removal and reinsertion. I really was stifling the screams! I had to keep telling the nurse to stop. Worse again, this might need doing for a few days! Nurse is coming round tomorrow to do it again.

Has anyone had these, that required packing, and how long did it actually go on packing it for?

I am serious when I say - at the first signs of an abcess, get to the docs. I certainly will be from now on!

And no, no pics. I think I will ask the nurse tomorrow to take a pic though!

Hey, I have had exactly the same problem it is called a PILONIDAL SINUS, basically it is caused by having a hair or nest of hairs grow under the skin which cause infection and extreme pain if not treated.

I still get minor ones now, When i first started to get the pain deep under the skin i would ignore it thinking nothing of it, then after a year or so it started to get worse painfull lumps upto an inch under the skin right in my butt crack (couldn't sit down or walk) i was constantly on my side, eventually the infected area would get bigger and bigger and i would be able to squeeze it real hard and get it to pop so to speak which enabled the puss to come out (like squeezing a massive zit), And i can tell you it smells rotten (not nice) It even used to pop and leak if i was at work or out sometimes and it felt like id **** myself with the puss leaking out..

Anyhow after many trips to the doctor i got refferd to a specialist at the hospital who took a look and told me what it was straight away (at this point it was about the size of a tennis ball and the pain was imense . they didn't even bother booking me in for surgery the just wheeled me in and operated, the next thing i know im waking up with a giant open wound in the worst place possible packed with a special silver based packing, anyhow they sent me home, telling me a nurse would call round the next day...

SO I get home im on the sofa and next thing i feel a strange sensation so i get up and drop my trousers to find im absolutely covered in blood and guess what the wound is gushing like a waterfall, so i get a lift back to hospital (only 2 hours after getting home) I go to A&E and they take me straight in put me in a bad and tell me to wait, so i wait and wait probably a couple of hours later a doctor comes in and has a look then put's me on a ward. So im now on a ward waiting for my dressings to be changed and to be seen by a surgeon, The whole night passes by, no dressing change and no surgeon the just put some of them cotton pants on my to soak up the blood im lying on my front the whole time to help stop the blood leaking out, (didn't really help) anyway the morning comes around it's now 8am and WWhhhhoooo a group of surgeons walk in take one look at me call the staff nurse who got a right old telling off and im being rushed into surgery once again. I wake up a couple of hours later to find that the 1st surgeon had cleared the nest of hairs causing the infection but while in there he has cut 3 blood vessels and not fixed them. Now im back on a ward to be left there for another 6 hours with no checkups just asked if iv'e been given food or not i say no and nurse walks away never to be seen, at this point im in real need of a wee, so i press the call button and nothing i waited nearly 20 minutes, so in the end a very kind female patient got out of her bed and came over to help me i was so relieved :p.

Im then discharged and sent home, the nurse visited every day to change the packing (dressing) but i also had to have my girlfriend change it, this went on for around 3 months ish until it was fully healed, but i continued to have problems and still do to this day.....I do have some pictures ill try and dig them out....

.I do have some pictures ill try and dig them out....

thanks but no thanks :D

in all seriousness that's quite a worrying story. glad you got it sorted. it's things like this which can take over a persons life until they get it sorted and it's easy to forget when most people go about their 9-5

You want pain?>

try haveing an extreme case of external Thromobsed hemmaroids.

Think about a Large grape sized Blood clot on your anus, then when it gets so big the skin cracks... And the doc has to Cut the clot out but cant make the area numb as there is no blood flow due to the clot...

And to make matters worse? Im 21 and its just come back :(

Tell me your under more pain ? :P

I fell for you mate, if its anything like the pain im in and was in when it was very bad then Man be greatfull your in super hopical drugs!

I had an infection in the joint of my left leg and groin after surgery, it was only about the size of a penny but immensly painfull at times and the smell was atrotious , took weeks to clear up even with strong antibiotics :(

Worst pain I have ever felt! They asked me if I wanted painkillers, told them I had plenty of paracetamol in the house. So they didn't write a prescription. However, after having th packing done I told them I wanted the better ones, tramadol. Which I now have 28 of.

I wanted Tramadol, They wouldnt let me have them as my operation wasnt as serious as others so there was no need....

how can haveing a gaping big hole in my anus not serious?

I had a sebaceous cyst removed from my shoulder about 6 years ago. I have never in my life experienced pain like it. It was phenomenal and the magnitude of the pain as the incision was created into the infected area (with no aesthetic) could only be rivalled by the accompanying stench that emanated from it.

Daily visits to the doctors ensued for several weeks to get the dressing changed. The dressing was in the form of a sort of elongated gauze that was pushed into the void of my shoulder to prevent it from healing (it has to heal from the bottom up). At the beginning the wound was able to accommodate the full 40cm dressing.

the thing is, I didn't even know it I had it until it became inflamed and needed surgical intervention.

Has anyone had these, that required packing, and how long did it actually go on packing it for?

Yes, it goes on for weeks and weeks and I'm sorry to say gets no better. You do however just get used to it but it doesn't get any less painful.

I have the pleasure of draining these as part of my job! They're extremely painful to have. Satisfying to drain any abscess as it's pretty much instant relief (apart from the packing).

Sorry to hear about yours, hope you recover ok!

I had something similar about 8 years ago, a deep skin infection halfway down the back of my left thigh, wasn't sure what it was as it got more painful I went to my GP who sent me to A&E where I get admitted. The first doctor says they'll have to operate and arranges it for that evening, a few hours later another doctor comes past, has a look and decides IV antibiotics should be fine and leaves. So for the next 3 days it's getting worse and worse and the original doctor comes past again. I'm a little concerned when his reaction is shock and "What the hell are you still doing here?!" Go into surgery a couple of hours later. Seems the infection had spread a lot during those extra days and I'm now missing a circle of flesh around 4 inches in diameter from the back of my leg with an extra deep hole about 1.5 inches across in the middle.

Had the district nurse coming round every day for a few weeks afterwards to change the packing and damn did that hurt, especially when some of it breaks up and she's poking away inside a raw open would with a pair of tweezers. Plus I wasn't able to walk properly for ages as the stretching in the skin of trying to straighten my leg was excruciating.

So, umm, best of luck :) I now affectionately refer to the enormous scar on my leg as a shark bite :)

I also had a Pilonidal Sinus. Six weeks off work this time last year. It's all cleared now but was damn painful and took an age to heal. Luckily my wife was not too freaked out about helping with the packing.
