Yas Marina Circuit

Abu Dhabi is a country on the move. Not content with enjoying one of the world's richest oil reserves, the region has recently thrown itself into a massive programme of development. And one of the jewels in Abu Dhabi's crown is the new 5.55-kilometre Yas Marina Circuit, which on November 1, 2009, hosted the country's inaugural Grand Prix. It was also the first F1 twighlight race, with powerful lighting ensuring a seamless transition from day to night.

Located on the spectacular Yas Island, the track is set to revolutionise the design of future Formula One circuits. Boasting top speeds of 320 km/h and average speeds of 195 km/h, it features nine right turns and 11 left turns and is one of the few venues on the calendar to run in an anti-clockwise direction.

Designed by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke, Yas Marina has a waterfront setting scenic enough to rival the likes of Monaco and Valencia. And with the track wrapping itself around the island's glamorous newly-built marina, there's plenty of mooring space for the paddock's plethora of yachts.

Its distinctive design also boasts several innovative elements including the stunning five-star, 500-room Yas Marina Hotel, which straddles the circuit; the 60-metre solar powered Sun Tower, which offers unrivalled views for invited guests; and a pit lane which sees the cars exit via a tunnel passing under the track.

Another world first is that all of the grandstands, including the massive hairpin seating area, are covered to protect spectators from the desert sun, whilst the state-of-the-art pit building boasts 40 air-conditioned garages. Luxuriant comforts and first-rate views are clearly the watchwords for Abu Dhabi race goers.

The track itself was designed with racing in mind. As well as the waterside marina area, there are high-speed sections (including the longest straight on the F1 calendar), tight corners for overtaking, and even a twisty street circuit-style sector. Overall, its diverse elements come together to create one of the longest and most demanding tracks in the world, where close and competitive racing is guaranteed.

Was wondering if this track would suddenly turn up with a bunch of changes too it, but looks like it hasn't. Potential for another snooze fest on Sunday :(

Also, dibs on the claim of 2 DRS zones.

Nice post Duke ;)

I thought they was changing turns 6 and 9? another boring race on a boring track.
I bet Webber hates this track as he was the rb,s sacrificial lamb last season.

Well Im sure there will be less team bias (if there was any last year - to be diplomatic) this season just so Mark has a chance of getting 2nd in the drivers championship

Still up for grabs between JB, Alonso, Mark and possibly Lewis (latter I think needs a very strong result AND for JB not to score significantly in at least one race) but if Vettel still continues pushing as he has done, its really between 1st two

Lol, I love the conspiracy theory rubbish around this. They were racing Alonso, they pitted in line with racing Alonso, and then Webber failed to have the speed to catch or the skill to overtake.

Simple as that.

No conspiracy just fact. They was racing Alonso but they used webber as bait to bring in Alonso..
RB chose webber and Ferrari took the bait vimto won..simples really.

Both came out in traffic overtaking for anyone was bad that's why the FIA
said after the race they would change turn 6 and 9.

At the end of the day rb wanted vimto to win not matter who had to fall.

edit=it was a stupidly early stop for webber which meant webber got screwed with backdoor team orders

Yet if the gamble had worked and they had leapfrogged Alonso, everyone would be saying it was a genuis call by them

There was no back handers to ensure Vettel won.

And as for overtaking, that race showed Alonso for his true colours. Right infront of you is 1 rookie, and all you have to do is overtake him, and you can win your 3rd title. If you don't overtake him, your not winning, so you have nothing to loose. Anyone in their right mind would put every effort possible in a do or die overtake to get past. But Alonso didn't, he just sat there, and complained.

yes he made no effort :) maybe you should just focus on this years race rather than making silly comments about last years, maybe you should go watch it again before making comments :)

In your fantasy world do you own a castle and unicorns?

well this is the track that sticks out for me as the reason DRS was introduced...lets see if it actually adds anything. Sensible time at least means i might not fall asleep like i did with the Indian GP.

Are we talking about the same race?

I remember watching Alonso follow Petrov for about 40 laps, with the only glimpse of an overtake being an occasional move out of the slip stream and back in again on the long straight.

:D

You are claiming he did not try?

How much overtaking did you see in the race?

He didn't try.

And there was very little overtaking.

My point however, is that is was the final race of the season, if he didn't get past, he didn't win. If he stuck it in the barriers, he also didn't win. Therefore surely anyone who want's that 3rd title that much is going to sling a wild outbraking manouver down the inside at some point as at the end of the day, he had nothing to loose.

But he didn't. He just sat there, and complained.
