Yas Marina

Abu Dhabi is a country on the move. Not content with enjoying one of the world's richest oil reserves, the region has recently thrown itself into a massive programme of development. And one of the jewels in Abu Dhabi's crown is the new 5.55-kilometre Yas Marina Circuit, which on November 1, 2009, hosted the country's inaugural Grand Prix. It was also the first F1 twighlight race, with powerful lighting ensuring a seamless transition from day to night.

Located on the spectacular Yas Island, the track is set to revolutionise the design of future Formula One circuits. Boasting top speeds of 320 km/h and average speeds of 195 km/h, it features nine right turns and 11 left turns and is one of the few venues on the calendar to run in an anti-clockwise direction.

Designed by renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke, Yas Marina has a waterfront setting scenic enough to rival the likes of Monaco and Valencia. And with the track wrapping itself around the island's glamorous newly-built marina, there's plenty of mooring space for the paddock's plethora of yachts.

Its distinctive design also boasts several innovative elements including the stunning five-star, 500-room Yas Marina Hotel, which straddles the circuit; the 60-metre solar powered Sun Tower, which offers unrivalled views for invited guests; and a pit lane which sees the cars exit via a tunnel passing under the track.

Another world first is that all of the grandstands, including the massive hairpin seating area, are covered to protect spectators from the desert sun, whilst the state-of-the-art pit building boasts 40 air-conditioned garages. Luxuriant comforts and first-rate views are clearly the watchwords for Abu Dhabi race goers.

The track itself was designed with racing in mind. As well as the waterside marina area, there are high-speed sections (including the longest straight on the F1 calendar), tight corners for overtaking, and even a twisty street circuit-style sector. Overall, its diverse elements come together to create one of the longest and most demanding tracks in the world, where close and competitive racing is guaranteed.

Another boring circuit, good on the eye.. rubbish racing.

I hope Ferrari can challenge the run-away Red Bull.

Yeah not the best of tracks, possibly worse than India. Cars look good though. Also hope to see Alonso up there again.

Depending on grid positions, I don't even think I'm going to bother getting up to watch this weekend. I've found the tail end of this season utterly dull after a promising start.

Thanks Duke.

Corners 5-7 and 8-9 has not changed :( Come on knip lets see how good your rain dancing is :)

Its great isn't it. After everyone complained that the start of the season was too random and they were warned that domination would be boring, everyone is now complaining how the end of the season is boring and they want the random racing back.

With no rule changes for 2013, expect another Vettel snoozefest next year too.

I didn't like the random nature of the tyres and I don't mind someone winning the title in dominant fashion as long as there is some sort of a decent race going on. Mind you the tracks aren't helping.

Sadly I think you are right, next year will be another red bull walk over. Whatever was removed that hindered them they have rapidly got over. I can't see any reason why that would change next year.

My sky sub runs out in the close season and I can't see me renewing it. I've fallen out of love with F1 with the current rules and regulations :(

When you have someone like Maldonado winning then it was too random and you know it :p

Cheers Duke. Another borefest most likely, circuit looks good but that's all.

Its great isn't it. After everyone complained that the start of the season was too random and they were warned that domination would be boring, everyone is now complaining how the end of the season is boring and they want the random racing back.

With no rule changes for 2013, expect another Vettel snoozefest next year too.

People are hard to please, never happy. :p :D

I liked the start of the season it spiced it up.

I got all excited F1 was on this weekend (forgot it was back to back) then read its Abu Dhabi :(

Even the commentators hate this place, iv been thinking a game should be played where everyone gets over excited every time they make a dig at dullness of these places, they did loads of "well the drives seem to love this track" for India with no personal preference (or mention of fans). But that is an aside I think someone needs to take one for the team (and the sport) and just block Vettel for the whole quali session so he starts mid pack and can get Grosjean-ed....

Only plausible way to liven up a GP that just needs a lot of civil unrest for F1 to take the hint that it's not worth it.

Cheers Duke :)

1 week breaks are nice even if the tracks aren't the best... Least we have Texas and Brazil to look forward to after this just hope Vettel doesn't run away with it to dull those down.

Who is the next Adrian Newey in F1?

We've got some of the best drivers around, but only one designer who has a legendary status some can only dream off. I'm pretty sure he's paid more than most drivers are, which is saying something!

Since that epic ferrari team split, there really is only one designer to follow and that's newey. Williams and Mclaren must really be kicking themselves for not letting him have the roles he wanted in the companies. Hindsight is a wonderful thing though.

He's worth more than any driver on the grid.
