Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2013, Yas Marina - Race 17/19

Plus this "Vimto" quip has been used by.................well, no one else on these forums ever, and as a nickname is about as funny and witty as a garden spade.

FTR, I'm not exactly the biggest Vettel fan.

To be fair "Vimto" was used quite a lot a few seasons ago - but any (timy amount of ) humour that was present with it left the building alonggggggg time ago

"Head and Newey were both charged with manslaughter. "The court case was a depressing annoyance, and extra pressure, but it did not make me question whether I wanted to be involved in F1. It's the self-searching rather than the accusations that really matter."

Thats down to the stupidity of Italian law not anything else.

I dont believe any other team have ever been charged with Manslaughter etc (even as recently as last year , in more junior races admittedly)

Merlin5 has it spot on. Its not about artificially pegging back RBR, its about the competition stepping up. Given the cumulative success shared by the rest of the F1 grid over 60+ years of the sport, its rather embarrassing that they have been defeated so comprehensively by a young and originally much smaller team.

Im not begrudging them at all - but a lot of it IS down to Newey (and how the current rules are based all around "aero").

so what if it was "orginally" a much smaller team. Majority of its success has been as a gigantic team (nothing wrong with this, but just seams a pointless thing to say).

I think people's idea of how 'gigantic' RBR are is a bit unfounded.

They have for example, from what I can tell, 1/3 of the Autoclaves that McLaren have, with Ferrari having maybe even more. In fact after visiting the factory I think not being huge is actually a major factor in why they are so good.

So your glossing over all the Sauber, Mercedes, Schumacher, McLaren, Customer Chassis, Technical Partnership and Drivers being Mates points? Or will they be covered in a later post?

I've never excused Schumacher for letting Vettel past "just because" in his final race. It was a douchey move and it cost him much of the respect he'd earned from me since his comeback.

Sauber didn't stop Perez racing Alonso that time because Ferrari told them to, they did it because he couldn't catch Alonso and it was better to secure the place he had with a conservative drive. I don't recall any other incident where a Sauber let a Ferrari through, but I'm sure you'll clarify - along with everything else you said.

I post my fair share of agro with regards to RBR winning all the time.

Then you get certain members who post completely retarded posts and make childish snide remarks at others.

Birmingham is a funny place.

I used to enjoy making them, gave up replying and won't be doing them anymore (inc testing, launches, etc). Thanks to those that did enjoy them.

Simply… bugger. :(

That's a real shame Duke, your contribution to this subsection is very much appreciated.

I'm not sure what's happened; we (everyone in the Motorsport section) used to engage in some lively but entertaining debates about all aspects of F1.

Last year things got a bit nasty and this year things have been decidedly subdued.

> come to motorsport section
> click an F1 thread
> thanks Duke posts etc some civil discussion almost for 1st page sometimes 2.
> page 3 RBR hatred starts
> bitter power posting ensues from the same old faces
> page 4 or 5 the Button mocks come out to try bait someone. 1 poster always bites.
> Rest of thread filled up with bile and hatred towards Vettel, conspiracy theories, annoying use of Vimto, fat john other unfunny childish nicknames.
> close thread never bothered post or deleted the one you wrote out becuse 'muh whats the point'.

AMIRIGHT?

Duke has been doing it what, 3 years now? And given that he now just seems to be creating threads only for people like you to trash I can't say I blame him for wanting to seek a more mature environment to discus F1 in. His threads are epic, but the actual community on here has changed. Things move on. Duke, your contribution will be missed. Thanks.

Thought this might be the case after you made the threads for the last few races the other week. Sad times but fully understand your decision.

Would like to thank you for the effort you put into these threads, used to really enjoy them.

Well I hope your change your mind duke, everyone around really appreciates your threads. Posts have been pretty bad recently, but I can understand it. What's there to talk about right now? There's not really any technical stuff going on this year. The most interesting innovation this year was probably the little dimples on the inside of wheels. There's not much to talk about on track, not much in the way of incredible overtakes. And the championship became a foregone conclusion while there were still many many races to go.

Hence the threads get filled with complaints and bickering, and that will probably be the way until the end of the season. But when the season is over we'll have as exciting an off season as we've seen for a while. The start of the season will be awesome to see unfold as we find out about the reshuffled pecking order. And there's always the possibility it will stay that way for the whole season, so I'm looking forward to it. And the interesting discussion and viewpoints found in here will return when all that stuff does.

Sorry to hear that Duke, the time and effort you have put in these past few years has been appreciated.

I dont feel as "connected" to F1 now as I have in the past, and thats a lot of things coming together - Sky not being financially viable (block of flats) and therefore not watching it live (and listening on the R5L just isnt the same), RBR's dominance /McLaren particularly being awful this season, and some in here just making it unpleasant to spend any time on here, and even when F1 is on live on BBC, I just dont like BE anywhere near as much as MB / MW in the past. From what I have seen Suzi has done ok, but Jake fitted perfectly and no disrespect to her but these were always going to be big boots to fill.

Im sincerely hoping Sparky and his colleagues dont do such a "perfect" job this winter as they have over the last few - the new regs are the only chance of bringing some excitement back into F1 (and if they do , so be it and a very "well done") - I just want a one or two more teams at least at their level from 2014 onwards (even if it comes down to certain teams blowing away all others at different types of track - as long as there is variety in the winners)

the endless rbr debate and every race is boring is tedious, the last race was boring tho

it is a combination of factors and does show f1 is loosing its appeal especially in the casual watcher i guess

such a shame duke but i dont blame you tbh

/McLaren particularly being awful this season

I'm just highlighting this as it seems to be a trend, but I'm wondering; why is there a love of McLaren here? They are one of the coldest teams on the grid (OK, they're better than they were, but they're still a corporate and fairly robotic machine). I can appreciate that followers of the British drivers would like McLaren when Hamilton was there with Button, but it's not exactly a trend for them.

I'm fairly neutral to them myselves (I'm not really a fan of anyone to be honest, driver or team, British or otherwise*), but they've never struck me as a team which attracts any loyalty from the fans. I'm just curious as to why others feel drawn to them.

* While I do support Britain in other sports, (olympics, football, whatever), I've never had that with F1. I've always been attracted to the drivers or teams I like, such as Alesi, Barrichello, Petersen, the Stewart team and the pre-Stoddart Minardi. Nigel Mansell is the only Brit I've connected with, and only then for his dogged determination against drivers naturally superior to him, and he didn't exactly ooze personality.

I like Button, but more for his off-the-track attitude and endeavours and apparently genuinely top-bloke personalty (who wouldn't want a pint with Jenson?) - on the track I find him as boring as a driver could possibly be.

Could have, 40 mile commute is enough for me, plus they are so anal . Like working in a museum!

still could but we have lost enough people as it is!
