I do hope the stewards received legal advice before producing their determination. I cant see a court ruling in the same way.

I just figured it out.... I know exactly what's happened today.

Michael M has saved Formula 1.
(Oh boy this should attract everyone's attention :D)
But hear me out though before you lynch me.

For a moment, please put aside "right and wrong, moral/ethical" and think about it from an "entertainment/business" point of view.
I have genuinely lost count the number of times that Hamilton has won back to back championships, and sorry to state the old cliché, that such repetitiveness/dominance (not the fault of Hamilton or Mercedes) cant be good to appeal to the market for new fans.

I'm not condoning what Michael did, I'm not a Hamilton fan but I also feel Hamilton was cheated out of the championship.

But on a certain level, I wouldn't be surprised if the decisions taken today by Michael were "heavily pre-influenced" by Liberty Media to:

a) Try to finish the year with a bang (WWE?) and more importantly:
b) Try to steer the WDC into the hands of a new driver.

Yes there is a good chance of alienating Hamilton's fan-base, but I'm sure the likelihood of fans who will follow through on "Im never going to watch F1 again" will be respectively low (except CaptainRAVE :) - incidentally F1 YouTube Race Highlights are a godsend, squeezes an entire race afternoon in a 5 mins or so :p)

Nothing is more entertaining that controversy and lets face it, whether you were a Hamilton fan, a Verstappen fan, a neutral fan, today we got "an edge of the seat" last lap which I haven't seen since Hamilton Vs Massa in 2008.

Very tin foil hat stuff I'm sure, but hey, its been a crazy Sunday as I'm sure you will agree.

Bash away :)

Merc crying because they didn't pit for the softs, their mistake.
Shame for hamilton as he didn't put a foot wrong.
Usual fia nonsense this race.
But red bull were there to capitalise.

Mercedes didn't need to overturn anything, they've got their pound of flesh now, they didn't roll over and take it from the FIA and the licence holders will take the hit.

Can of worms well and truly everywhere for the sport though.

Funny, reminds me of an election that happened in 2020!

This is the bit that's nonsense to me....

Why were the other cars (the remaining 3 cars that had been lapped) not allowed to pass.... Masi can't just pick and choose to let 5 go and not the other 3 just because that puts Max up the backside of Hamilton...

Why not choose 2 cars to pass or 7 cars to pass....

Zero integrity to allow just the right amount of cars to pass to allow Max to be on Hamilton for the last lap. That part of it is a farce.... Just pick 5 as that's a good number....Come on.... Ridiculous.

How can Red Bull argue the wording and sway the meaning. The stewards and racing director should be aware of the context of the word.

If "any" actually means 'n' number of cars (which it doesn't) then surely Masi has to explain why he decided on the 'n' number. Rather than 'y' or 'z' number of cars.

Note to self, when you get found out for not doing something, ensure you have a silly clause which says all rules are at my discretion.

Codemasters need to add this into next years game.

Indeed, they had a way to get back to racing ASAP already available in the rules - just don't bugger about unlapping people.
Annoyingly they announced that FOUR MINUTES before they decided to play musical chairs. Disgrace.

Having considered the various statements made by the parties the Stewards determine the following:

That Article 15.3 allows the Race Director to control the use of the safety car, which in our determination includes its deployment and withdrawal.

That although Article 48.12 may not have been applied fully, in relation to the safety car returning to the pits at the end of the following lap, Article 48.13 overrides that and once the message “Safety Car in this lap” has been displayed, it is mandatory to withdraw the safety car at the end of that lap.

That notwithstanding Mercedes’ request that the Stewards remediate the matter by amending the classification to reflect the positions at the end of the penultimate lap, this is a step that the Stewards believe is effectively shortening the race retrospectively, and hence not appropriate.

Accordingly, the Protest is dismissed. The Protest Deposit is not refunded

It's a sad say for both camps

Max's first championship will never be seen as legitimate by fans in general

Hamilton was robbed of an 8th and record breaking title after domination of the final race.

We were robbed of a last 5 lap dogfight on fresh tyres a red flag could have created.

It's a very VERY sad day for F1.

If it wasn’t for the farcical handling of the situation by the stewards then their strategy would have proved to have been bang on.

If Lewis pitted and MAx stayed out do you REALLY THINK the same thing would have happened? It would without a doubt ended under the SC crowing max..

I can’t see anything changing from the court side, but would like to be proved wrong. I think the most merc will secure is financial compensation. The argument that procedure wasn’t followed may win, but I don’t think they will be able to argue that the only way to correct this is to then re-write rules to change the champion.

If Hamilton pitted to softs, I would bet good money we would have finished under SC.

Too many people think this outcome is good for F1.

That appeal result is full of many issues in itself. Admitting to basically placing more racing above safety and procedures...from the FIA!?
What an awful end to the season even if you are a Max fan surely? That feeling that it is already tarnished and may not stand must feel terrible. Good. He and RB deserve nothing less.

It's never been about how much of a show you put on. You have rubbish football matches but the ref doesn't just make up a rule to have the best spectacle for fans. The integrity has been wiped out and makes me feel like watching f1 now as a fan wanting fairness, is impossible.
