Hopefully the FIA get it sorted for next season as having an entire season and a WDC surrounded in controversies makes the entire sport, supposedly the pinnacle of motorsport, look a bit of a shambles.

Although the race made me realise how much better Whiting was at being Race Director.

But they can't appeal with a subject heading "FIA are rubbish, please improve", they have to appeal the subject matter of "RACE RESULT". They will focus solely on circumstances surrounding this.

Masi has caused a PR nightmare for everyone involved because appealing the 48.12 related ruling is something that really ought to be done - it's an awful precedent to set that 15.3 means the race director can do whatever he wants.

However, for the FIA to admit Masi did something he probably ought not to have done, they have to consider what the theoretical alternative outcomes would be and there aren't any/many options to do that without throwing a tiger amongst the pigeons.
  • Admit it was a mistake, that more lapped cars should have been let past and one extra lap as per 48.12, race result changes and championship result changes - PR disaster
  • Admit it was a mistake, that they should have left lapped cars behind to go racing - race result becomes a total unknown and pure speculation - Probable PR disaster, arguably even more messy than it already is
  • Admit it was a mistake, null and void the last lap, race result changes and championship result changes - PR disaster
  • Admit it was a mistake, null and void the entire race, race result null, championship result stands - PR headache but maybe workable alongside pushing Masi under the bus and I don't think actually impacts any championship positions for either title?
  • Deny it was a mistake, set the precedent that the regulations are only the regulations as long as the race director feels like they are because his overriding authority allows him to ignore them at will - still not good PR and will likely cause arguments and chaos next year with teams questioning why rules were and weren't applied
I suspect more likely is that Mercedes will drop it because they have the constructors and Lewis won't want a tainted drivers title won in a court but that behind the scenes there is some extremely heavy revision of the sporting regulations for 2022 (hopefully to remove the FIAs wiggle room but that may be a misguided hope)

There really needs to be room to admit mistakes were made without changing anything.

I don't think Lewis is coming back next season to the delight of max fanboys.

Get a grip.

Both team principals were over the line in the final race. The difference being Horner is constantly that bad :p

On Perez.. he slowed Hamilton down enough for Max to go from ~8s behind to ~1s behind in HALF A LAP. It was a bit unsporting but he did the right thing for his team and it was some great racing.. even though I bet Lewis was spitting feathers inside his helmet following behind as he parked on the apex.

Perez was literally doing his job, like Bottas has multiple times over the past few years. How on earth is it unsportsmanlike?

I haven't said that Bottas' behaviour was any more unsportsmanlike? I want a fair fight... not a team mate playing funny buggers. The term "unsporting" was one I've seen on youtube appraisals of the race and whilst I agree it's a harsh term... where do you draw the line? OK for alpha tauri to do it to Lewis/George?

I happen to think Perez did a great job, but it's something that is open for abuse which I'd like to avoid. This forum went mental when Lewis did it to Nico and rightly so.

We all know what happened even the Max supporters, so the fia lost, the jokes on them. They made themselves look like a bunch of clowns again.

Hello fia, hello Masi you think you're great don't you well guess what everyone else thinks.

There were three ways to finish Sunday's race, all within the rules.

1. Behind the safety car
2. Bring in the safety car with a lap to spare with back markers in place meaning that Max would have to fight pass 4 cars, all of which would be given given blue flags and then beat Hamilton on fresh tyres. Perfectly doable for 'sUpA mAx' and the greatest driver in the world according to his fan base.
3. Red flag the race after the incident, everyone back to the pits, fresh tyres and a 3-4 lap sprint to the end

All the above would have favoured neither driver given the race up to this point and with the exception of 1. provided the exciting and close racing finish this season deserved.

People saying it's not Max's fault and yes I agree but it's not Lewis' either. The end of this race was absolutely ruined by Masi and the FIA need to be taken to task over this to stop it happening again which I hope Mercedes do. Can there be a fair result at the end of all this? Who knows, I wouldn't like to see Max de-crowned as Champion but can the final race be ignored for both drivers and thus it's a draw for the end of the season, I don't even know if that is possible?

I don't think the crash warranted a red flag but this would have been epic, especially from a standing start.

Certainly not but it would have reset the race and the best man would have won. I don't agree with how Max overtakes (always running drivers wide) but you cannot argue those last 3-4 laps would have been pretty interesting and special!
