LH was like 7s ahead. He would have come out on fresh tyres, not far behind Max. There is no way Max could have held LH for 30 laps.

Have you seen Max race this season?

Them pitting to cover Max early was the largest mistake, had mediums with huge life left in them and dropped an 8 second gap because of being interfered by Checo.

Obviously Max blew it on lap 1 but even if he got track position there he has to pit and Lewis can win on med->hard alone.

Merc absolutely blew this race is Lewis loses

You are then at risk of VSC or safety car as Brundle & Co explain time and time again. When you are in front and have a pace advantage you simple mirror your competitor. Of course things can go wrong but that’s motor racing you try to minimise the risks but they are always there.

Why are people saying Merc screwed the strategy? If they pit they would have lost of track position

Had Merc pitted, Hamilton would have been ~7 seconds behind Verstappen if Verstappen didn’t pit. On new tyres he’d have made that up easy and should have been able to breeze past at the end of the race.

If Verstappen also pitted then it would have been status quo.

It also would mean Merc would be safe if there’s any other VSCs or SCs.

A VSC or SC would benefit him even more then as Max had already pitted, no?

You only risk an undercut which the pace was showing Max was absolutely no where near
