Abu Dhabi Prix 2015, Yas Marina - Race 19/19

Rosberg. Bravo.. epic stuff. Hamilton was wringing the life out of that car and lap.

The guy in front has stopped trying.

No way. Seen countless interviews with that question brought to him and he keeps insisting he is trying 100 percent. The car changed since Sinagapore and Rosberg has been/is being better with it than Hamilton is.

So why hasn't Hamilton asked for the pre Singapore spec back?

I'm sure he is trying 100%, but sometimes it's having something to play for that really brings out the top performance in people. It could be that Rosberg performs better with the pressure off and Hamilton with it on.

Hamilton's complained about balance in the past four races more than Jenson has in his entire career!

Interesting about Alonso - it seems that there could be some truth behind the rumours. Great opportunity for Vandoorne. F1 needs drivers with names like Stoffel.

the Hamilton column on the Beeb said:
If I'd won every single race and got pole everywhere, that would just be boring. It would suck. Where's the fun in that?

Well frankly Lewis, if you're genuinely saying that then it probably means that you weren't actually trying to blitz the field by getting pole, fastest lap, lead all laps and race win at every single round. And if you aren't trying to get pole, fastest lap, lead every lap and win at every race you turn up to....WHAT THE **** ARE YOU EVEN DOING THERE???!?!?

Did he say that he's been deliberately holding back, or was it in the context of actually wanting some competition to fight against?

Pass. But either way, if he genuinely doesn't want to win every week then there's something wrong somewhere. Because he should be out there to do just that - crush everyone, set records that cannot be beaten, dominate on a scale never seen before. Otherwise, what's the point?

Or maybe that's just another example of me being very far out of the wheelhouse that modern F1 fandom resides in.

I'm firmly of the belief that if he wasn't contractually oblidged too he wouldn't even be turning up to these races.

^This. That hunger and drive (no pun intended) to win the WDC for a 3rd time gave pinpoint focus to Lewis which is what gave him the edge in many qualis and most races over Rosberg. So much concentration over the season to gain the most important tenths and hundredths and to overtake poll from 2nd place on more than one occasion. He won what was necessary and while he might be hungry to win a few more polls and races, I think he's spent and it doesn't really matter.

It's too little too late for Nico.

Are you not able to see that perhaps he would enjoy winning championships that are hard fought? He's right, it would be boring if he just turned up every weekend and walked all over everyone.

Sure, the aim should be to win everything, but it shouldn't be easy to do it.

Have you never played a game and turned the difficulty up because its more enjoyable when it's a challenge? I bet Hamilton enjoyed last year more than this year.

Sure I have. And if F1 was a game I'd say sure - turn the difficulty up, increase the challenge. The worst you can do is lose the game. So what? Just go back to the main menu, start the game again and see how you do next time.

But this is supposed to be a sport, supposed to be about the very best drivers in the world going out in the very best racing cars in the world and competing for out-and-out supremacy. You think Fangio paused in '54 and '55 to think 'you know, maybe it isn't right that my Mercedes team are light-years ahead of the rest in both professionalism and car design'? You think Clark and Hill were worried about how the sport would cope when Chapman handed them the Lotus 49 with that wonderful DFV nailed into the back of it? You think anyone at Lotus cared about the rest of the field when they sent the 79 out to dominate? I can't imagine that there were too many sorry faces in the McLaren camp through 1988 - in fact, by all accounts they were beyond furious that Monza scuppered their chances of winning every single race that year. And there's no way in hell that Our Nige was sorry about being handed the FW14B for his 1992 campaign.

I don't give a **** if one team dominates as long as they didn't cheat to do so and as long as there's some half-decent action somewhere in the pack. Right now, we've got intermittently good racing with one dominant team and deeply uninteresting bunfights away from the racetracks. And that's just boring. Hamilton and Rosberg racing away at the start and lapping the entire field by the halfway point, with a good fight over third place and a bunch of desperate mid-grid kamikazes trying to get themselves noticed by bigger teams - that would be a decent spectacle :)

We both know that there could be the most amazing racing from 3rd to 20th every weekend, and 90% of people would still declare it boring simply because a Mercedes won.

And the opinion of that 90% really matters to me.

Genuinely.

Or not :p

So, it seems like this is going to be another predictable GP.
Merc just can't stop winning or getting pole positions.

So, I was just taking a look at McLaren and how they have progressed (if at all).
I looked at the first 3 GPs and the last 3 GPs.
I looked at the 6 qualifying results of each set (2 cars, per GP) and calculated the average qualifying position.

First 3 GPs:17.5
Last 3 GPs:17

Now, I did state last year that a new Honda engine, with no track mileage would be very risky. Many people believed the press releases from McLaren stating that they will improve dramatically (in big jumps) and compete for podiums by the end of this year. It seems to me that they have made no progress.

Let's also not forget that Alonso (recently) during a race stated that his engine is like GP2 engine, where his rivals simply drive past him on the straight.

Merc have proved that they know how to design/build a great engine and also improve upon it. Honda have proved neither. So, with this in mind, why would McLaren or anybody believe that Honda can now make progress over the Winter and ultimately produce a winning package?

Is it not time for McLaren to jump ship?
Could they plead/beg/pay for a Merc (or another, proven) engine for next year?
What are their options?
