If someone could help diagnose my car issue that would be great :)

When I accelerate in the first few gears my car wheel shakes uncontrollably from left to right and there's a loud clanking sort of sound from beneath. The shaking is still there up until around 60mph when it quietens down.

Any ideas? It's booked into the garage but was hoping to get some idea before my wallet gets emptied :p

Upper ball joints could be knackered. Along with any other number of suspension issues. The clanking is worrying though. How much clanking is there, and what does it sound like? Is it sustained, or intermittant.

When my Prelude's were dead it was really jumpy under (heavy) accelleration and would pull me left and right all over the shop till it leveled out past 30ish

Once i replaced them, it tracked much straighter.

You also might want to say what car it is?

Oh, and check you have not dropped off a wheel weight, or got some tyre damage!

*edit* jacking the car up and giving the wheels a good shove to check the bearings might be sensible too.

CV joint breaking up is a possibility, or collapsed wheel bearing. A worn balljoint wouldn't normally give a violently shaking steering wheel on acceleration.

I should add that it only happens after the cars been running for a while, like 20 miles or so. I started iit up earlier and it was fine? Cars a clio btw

My prelude was pulling me all over the road, especially when accellerating hard in vtec, replacing the joints cleared it up totally :)
