Accelerator stuck @ 135mph

What an absolute attention seeking muppet. A 318 auto won't hit 130mph anyway.

He could have braked to 70, then in the hard shoulder flicked into neutral or killed the engine.

UNbelievable.

Saw this earlier, scary ....

Handbrake, anyone? :D

Edit: He couldn't change gears apparently - but yeah, I wonder why he didn't turn the engine off. Or why the police didn't tell him to

/wonders if there's a reason

You can still steer it just wouldn't be power assisted, not a problem at 135mph!

Well wouldn't you have to turn it off and turn the key once to stop the steering lock coming on.

Also the brakes would defo not work without the engine off even if they decided to start again. Poor guy though. :)

I was in tears most of the time on the phone to the police - I really could see myself dying," he told the BBC.

Big baby to be honest!

why didnt he just take it out of gear and just cruise to a stop?!

Steering lock only comes on when you remove the key - he wouldn't need to do that.

A handbrake would burn out in about 30 seconds it definitely isn't designed for use whilst the car is moving...

He said the gears were jammed but to be honest what are the odds of the gearbox and the throttle failing?

Sounds strange

How easy is it to take an automatic into neutral at speed?

Listening to the interview it seems that the police advised him to keep going rather than turning the engine off etc...

Sounds quite frightening really especially if you don't know what's happening or how to stop it.

In my car the brakes are assisted by a vacuum pump. Without the engine on the brake pedal locks and you have no brakes, perhaps his is the same?

So what? haha if he turned off the engine he would come to a stop anyway! Also the brakes still work they just required a lot of effort without the servo.

He said he tryed to put into neutral but the gears were stuck. WTF!!!
How do the gears get stuck and the accelerator get jammed at the same time

The handbrake might have worked, it would have stopped the back wheels from spinning :p
But he would have probably lost control if he did it :o

I wonder what happened between the last reported speed (well over 100mph with the brakes failing), and the crash, because he obviously managed to lose a lot of speed to survive the impact.

Of course I'm sure everybody here would have reacted perfectly and wouldn't have been scared....

Like James Bond or Jack Bauer :D

Me, I'd have just aimed at the nearest big jump and gone out in superb style ;)

From my experiances ive seen Autos knocked back into nuetral at around 70-80mph
My sister got an auto into reverse while going about 80 or 90mph in and ambulance :p
The gear box didnt like that at all :D

Umm - probably hitting the roundabout furniture would cause the car to lose speed at a survivable rate, not sure
