Okay so I had to send my Phanteks PH-TC14PE back thanks to damage during transport. Meanwhile I'd like to test if the PC posts and check out the BIOS. I'd rather not fit the intel cooler only to replace it a couple of day later. Am I at risk of overheating the CPU while just looking at the BIOS?

Specs are Below

Fitting and removing an Intel cooler takes seconds.

You could have the PC installed and ready by the time the replacment cooler arrives. Even a gentle overclock is possible.

agree with greg, its a risk, needs some kind of heatsink on there, ive ran dual cores with a little heatsink laying on top and no fan, like 50c idle, wouldnt try that with a quad ivy tho

prob is more it doesnt use power saving in bios it goes 100%

Okay just was unsure about removing the thermal paste as I don't have any of the remover. Unless it doesn't really matter?

Okay bit of a strange start. Pressed on Button. Turned on for 5 seconds turned off for about 2-3 seconds then it turned back on and I get missing operating system before I get chance to enter bios

In the event that someone else searches for/reads this thread with a similiar question - the BIOS puts a fair load on the CPU so without a heatsink it will shoot up past 90C inside a minute, thermal management kicks in and it turns off potentially damaging the CPU if the thermal management fails to respond quickly enough.

yeh i did try to make this point^^
im surprised they not have speedstep in bios yet!?, mebe on the new mobos?
reading up on haswell some the power saving stuff is impressive with active sleep etc

As for removing thermal paste, I used my girlfriends Nail Polish remover and Makeup removing pads. As long as neither are scented then they are perfectly fine to use.

I was so surprised how well the paste came of with nail polish remover. After reinstalling the heatsink (Corsair H80 Watercooling Kit in my case) with Arctic Silver 5, rather then using the standards stuff that came preapplied my max load dropped by 10'C :)
