Appologies in advance for not really knowing where to post this one.

Bought a Panasonic TV a little while back that has a lan port and a couple of USB ports. Now Panasonic do a little wireless usb dongle that you can use to connect wirelessly should you want to, to access BBc-Iplayer and such.

Thing is Panasonic dongle is close to £100, and other wireless usb's appear not to be supported.

So knowing absolutely nothing about is could I use a wireless access port such as this

And simpley connect to the TV's lan port? Or is that just not what what they're for?

Does that access point have a LAN out port on it? If so, it should probably work and act as an extension of a wired network. The Linksys AP I have has a LAN in port, but no out though.

For what its worth. I was using a wifi dongle on my samsung (an official one), and while it worked ok for most things, I eventually replaced it with a wired connection as there were too many buffering delays when streaming large files (>5gb) on the wifi. It was unwatchable otherwise.

Do some searching for a generic dongle which works with panasonic and see if you can find one you can return if it doesnt work.

You would be better off with a wireless bridge rather than an access point. They used to be popular for connecting consoles to a wireless network as they require no drivers on the thing you are attaching it too. Basically you either configure it attached to a pc or it doesnt require any configuration other than pressing a button and once set up you plug it into your tv which sees it as just a normal ethernet connection so doesnt need any drivers.

Either that or have you thought about powerline adapters ?

That was my first thought, but I'm basically skint at the moment so was looking for "cheap n cheerfull"

After a bit of digging this looks like it's going to be the best alternative, apparently the Panasonic dongle is based on this one and people are having good results.

D-Link DIR-615 off ebay for about a tenner. Put DD-WRT firmware on it, and you've got a 802.11N bridge/AP/repeater.
Repeater is good as it can wirelessly bridge to your main router, and then beam the signal back out, extending the range, also giving you 4 or 5 ethernet ports to plug stuff into.

I've also got one of the panasonic dongles as it came with my TV, and on my TV it can only plug into the side, and it would stick out and look really silly. It's OK behind the blu ray player though

cheers andy, yes it is some thing i was looking at but put aside as because i only have a single mains outlet behind the pc, that already has an 8 way safeblock plugged into it. as they recommend they go straight into socket i sort of dismissed them.
but just by chance over the weekend came across these. (pass through)

As my router is a BT home hub thought they'd be ideal.

Little more digging and Amazon where knocking em out cheaper still, so bit the bullet and ordered a pair.

Once they arrive I'll let you know how they go, bit more than I wanted to pay but that's because I skint at the mo, but at least it's on the plastic..:)

Cheers for the advice.
