Setup:

Gigabit ethernet switch

1 x server 2003 with raid 5 storage using a gb ether
1 x client - vista pro using gb ether.
Both enabled large packeting.

Loading up MP3 files from server on client is really slow, ie double click and theres a 5 second delay.

Opening images from FS on teh client - again a 5 sec delay and sometimes even explorer.exe crashes.

Im sure this never used to happen and would really appreciate a list of things to check to sort this out..

Thanks,

Crikey this could be a hundred things, firstly, it is neccesary for you to have a switch when depending on your situation a simple cross over could suffice..?

If you have other systems on your network could there be anything else keeping the switch busy? how're the lights on your switch, as I'm sure you're aware lots of flashing indicates activity.

Vista as far as I'm aware isn't great for networking or transfering files which is one of the reasons it was never adopted in business environments, the problem could lie here, how is it if you access the same files from another PC perhaps one running Windows 7 or XP?

What are the ping results like between the server and client, would be worth running a ping against the hostname to check dns aswell as IP, is there any noticeable difference between the two sets of results?

I'd change the network cable for a new one, had this recently where a server would only connect @ 100mb and very slowly, changed the cable + wall socket and its back to normal, also have you installed the latest Vista Service Pack?

Yeah i guess thats a good call, switch says connected at 1gb though and can copy files to and from FS at a pretty good rate 25 MB /sec?!

i would first start looking into the networking services Vista runs

then i would look any power saving options on the server / raid card

on a side note do you get this delay on any other machine (say an old xp machine)?

Disable the jumbo frames unless every device on your network supports them (it's quite possible your switch or router doesn't, which would explain your problems).

I can still shift 100MB/s (800Mb/s) without them over my very similar network (Win7 client and a Raid5 on Server 2003)
