Ace Modder's HTPC Project Log

My thoughts are:

1: Don't listen to the person who said you shouldn't be spending X on a rented house. Nothing wrong with making a rented house nice if you plan to be there for a few years. Not everyone can afford a house. For me I'd need a deposit of 50k minimum and last time I checked, I had about 50 pence.

2: If you were doing the whole room I would have
a) Wall mounted the TV with chase run of cables hidden in the wall
b) Hidden all wires, although you say you are going to with new skirting

3: That wallpaper is terrible I have to agree with the above!

4: You've spent £700+ on a HTPC. The case alone is £250!! Mental. You could have got a Revo for <£200 or or or. So many options for much cheaper. You say you wanted to game though on the TV so.... fair enough. Still think this is a big over spend. You could have saved £500, sold your TV and bought a nicer, bigger TV.

5: So long as you are happy in your home, that's what matters and I hope you enjoy your new room. :)

Looking good Ace!

True but a quality HTPC just so hard to pass by. Ive just bought a Moneual 320 for £250. Can hold three 3.5" hard drives so will act not only as the HTPC but also as the home server, bit of encoding etc. Cant see myself replacing it for many years and it blends in perfectly with almost any AV setup.

I just don't see the point in kidding myself that storage needs aren't going to grow and grow and grow. Hence any HTPC that tries to sell itself as having the ability to store X number of disks inside it's own case is a waste of cash for me. Server for serving. HTPC for playing. PC for being a PC. Phone as a phone. Camera as a camera. I'm old fashioned me! ;)

Maybe he likes it. Not everybody likes the same thing, I am sure lots of people wont like your wallpaper either.

It's personal taste, and from what I've seen that's the fashion nowadays :)

If you read the posts you will see it was his wifes choice of paper, but still he stuck at it and got the job done where as i pay someone to come and do mine as i hate decorating.

So well done Ace.

That is a random video i found on my main PC, I tested the speakers with it as it was a long audio/video music video. It is the R Kelly - Hiding in the closet.

That is streaming via the PS3, the HTPC has not been built yet. Was waiting on the case, which arrived on Monday, but as Im not in the UK this week I wont be building it till the weekend.

I will keep you all informed this weekend on the progress.

Hey, nice project. I commented previously on the IR reciever you got, and said that it was a standard MCE one. Its not actually, it will emulate keyboard keys, and does not use the ehome driver. Depending on waht you want to use it for that might be an issue

Case / PSU and IR receiver arrived. So will be working on the build this weekend.

I am getting rid of those skanky nets and going to order a blind this weekend too.

Looking good!!

Would that case cool the CPU sufficiently? The A10's TDP is 100W where the case only supports 95w? I know it's not a massive amount of difference for 5w, but you wouldn't want the pico PSU struggling as well as an overheated case.

Looking good Ace. Bang tidy build there.

I have run prime95 the CPU doesnt go above 70 degrees which is fine. At the end of the day a HTPC won't tax the CPU that hard. :)

Bit warm for my liking as the max temp I believe is 74ºC for AMD Trinity but for just htpc duties it should stay some way below that.

Right.

Can anyone help with audio from my video files? MY amp is not playuing the audio from movies using XMBC, but is playing audio from mp3s. When I start a movie file (mkv or avi) it says something along the lines of failed to initialise audio device. I have spent the past 2 hours trying to fix it? No idea what the problem is?

Linked to my amp via onboard HDMI for audio and video.

Agreed. Very much sounds like codec issue. I'm running Windows 8 and XBMC through a cheapish Yamaha AVR and had some issue issues initially. Downloaded MPC-HC and FFDShow codecs which sorted it out. Will it play using other media players like VLC?
