The Acer S243HL sports a razor-thin depth of 15mm, creating a minimalist, professional look. It is encased in a classy black bezel and features a unique asymmetrical shape. Adding form to the elegantly simple design is a cylinder hinge on the rear and an L-shaped base with brushed-metal finish, accented by an LED light that glows in soft blue when the power is turned on. This monitor also features a discreetly integrated speaker and up to 8,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and uses mercury-free white LED technology for up to 63% eco-friendly power conservation. Is this an LED backlit monitor or a true LED monitor? I'm guessing the former?

Looks a lovely piece of kit although i'm not too sure about the stand. What's the IQ like?

LED panels get high contrast ratios because they're lit by individual LED's instead of strips of flourescent lamps. means you don't get backlight bleeding through in areas that shouldn't be lit. Having seen the samsung LED tvs at my work, I'll say that the colours are very nice in comparison to their LCD's so hopefully that difference translates to these monitors. Hmmm, thoughts.

it would be nice if tftcentral or someone could let us know if these are better then say the Pva/spva/ips panels that cost £400-500 ?

I would have thought led backlit screens even if its a TN panel would proove better ?

As with any make..the contrast ratio is just a random number between 1 and 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000.
Oh my...

But I creamed at that monitor.<3
And I disagree with the poeple hating the stand..
I actually loved the stand! It looks very futuristic and just plain beutiful.
If I did get this, I would be afraid that I would snap it in half.

That's an LED Panel, this (and your work LEDs) are LED Backlit panels. Just means the florescent tubes have been replaced by LED strips.

I don't think there are actually any LED panels out yet (except the ones that cover sides of buildings).:)

Wow, I would really like to get this to replace my Asus MW221u 22" but this Acer S243HLBMII doesn't have DVI-D like my Asus; it just uses HD-15 or HDMI which is a shame.

Would using it for mainly playing games on still attain great quality on a different connection type and which is best to use on this Acer LED? I'm assuming HD-15 isn't very good and my current graphics card is an Ati 4870 which uses DVI-D natively.

Thanks.

it will come with a DVI to HDMI adapter...

Sounds good and OC should mention this as its a good selling point.

Regarding the contrast ratio being 8000000: 1, I know this is DCR but I can't find out what it is normally & would like to know please if someone found out.

Also reading off the Acer site, it mentions "NTSC Colour situation: 68%" which seems low as other similarly-priced screen (non-LED) have been quoted at 72% and a Dell UltraSharp 3008WFP was 100% (pricey, I know you get what you pay for). I also do image adjustments to high-res digital photographs and it seem LED colours in this case isn't what I thought it would be.

Thanks.
