I was gonna create a thread a while ago about the Writers strike, this seemed the logical sub forum, but I was too lazy.

Now the Actors just joined them, It's time!

List of Hollywood strikes:

I'm sure most here remember the 2007-08 writers strike decimating a lot of network TV shows. The 2023 writers strike has done similar, so many returning seasons of shows delayed, and movies.
This is the 1st Actors strike that I can recall and most people are much more likely to take notice now as we all know film and tv stars' names, the writers not so much.

Who will settle first, writers, or actors? Does anyone care? End result is the same, no new content without either group.

Edit: When the writers strike began a couple of months ago some sites started making a list of shows that would be delayed or had paused filming. Now with the actors as well, it would be easier to make a list of things that aren't delayed!

Wherever the blame lays, this is devasting for tens (hundreds?) of thousands of families around the world as people lose their jobs. While the Unions rah rah themselves for going on strike and fighting the big man they are get financially supported for doing so. There are hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of people that are non-Union and can't union that rely on this industry that have no say, no seat at the table and will not benefit from these strikes when they are eventually over.

I've been driving past or through the picket lines since the WGA went on strike. At some point it is hard to find sympathy for people that are willing to sacrifice so many for their own gain, making themselves no better than the big corp that they are railing against.

I think Hollywood as a whole needs a break. They've run out of ideas, seem utterly burnt out, and we're fed up with them churning out garbage. Gone too far into the weeds with woke culture. Become narcissistic etc. Maybe everyone needs to go outside and touch grass for a while.

Them going on strike will be the perfect chance to clean house for the studios and it's be better for us. I have over 4 years of media to burn through anyway so i'm going to be fine for a while

I don't nt really understand it all but striking is the final you can do in any work dispute so I guess it's gotten to a bad stage.

But I agree Hollywood and western media has taken a general bad path for what seems a very long time now and the pursuit of wokeness over money, at least this is what's happened, is surely coming to an end.

Honestly the west is pussifying ourselves Into a weak state.

More reasons to accelerate development of AI.
Not sure if meant as a joke but a huge reason for the strikes is ensuring streaming services don't just ditch writers for AI.

On the flipside, the writers need to prove their worth as has been echoed in here - it's a pretty poor show from hollywood in recent years.

Obviously more of a joke, but it's a reality some should come to accept is going to happen no matter what. Wasn't a Disney exec that recently said in relation to the new Indiana Jones film that AI will mean we won't need Harrison Ford in the future, he's right if any celebrity is smart, they will be ensuring their likeness comes at a cost, which I'm sure many already do.

So in the above example, if you want to use AI to generate films with Harrison Fords likeness, well better stump up the royalty fees for it.

Which is fine for big stars, but extra's won't be able to charge huge amounts for their likeness.. or extras may just be completely replaced with AI generated people.

although even AI generated people will look like someone, wonder when the first.. You stole my likeness lawsuit will occur.

It'll be an interesting case to witness as the AI laywers duke it out.

Things that have been suggested by the streamers/studios etc. is having extras turn up for one day on set, scanning them and using their likeness for the rest of the shoot. So potentially 4-5 months pay could turn into one day at most. I think this strike is mainly about streamers like Netflix. They have totally different financial setups.. e.g. everyone knows how well traditional theatrical releases do at the BO and although a lot of Hollywood accounting goes on, you get there in the end. On the other hand if you make a movie for Netflix, how do you get residuals from that? Are Netflix even honest with their production budgets? Or honest with the stats they (sometimes) release? Nobody knows.

Already happened if you include video games!

I didn't read their full list of demands/issues, but I did read this one. If it's true it's quite a bad deal for all the little people. 1 days pay is beyond greedy by the studios!
