Actors join Writers on strike

Always a silver lining.

If this drags on for a long time (how long have the writers been striking now?) this could have dire consequences for cinemas off the back of covid lockdowns.

I fear this will be the end for them. They are done. :(

May get more opportunity to see actual older good films on the big screen before they close though.

80% ere Start frothing now :p
That looks like a refreshing and exciting new project from Disney that will be a guaranteed winner at the box office.

Even just the costumes look cheap and nasty.

Has to be some AI generated image surely?

Writers been going for 2 months and 12 days already.

Could end quickly or take ages. I'm sure some films in the oct-dec period could easily get delayed if it doesn't end by say September.

More reasons to accelerate development of AI.

This is quite possibly an accelerator.

If AI is going to take these jobs.. It will.
No amount of striking is going to stop it.
As with everything, in our capitalist model, if AI can do it nearly as well for what is effectively free.. Its going to happen.

You're literally talking about a film being able to be made in under a day if AI can do it all.

And it will cost? Pretty much 0!

It could come very very quickly.

I totally understand the fear. But if its gonna happen.. Its gonna happen.

I'm surprised cineworlds creditors are Keeping it going. I see it as throwing good money at a dead horse.

I guess (like covid) there will be a lag.
And then it will hit.

Will likely be a huge hit to Netflix , D+ etc if content really does dry up.

On plus side.. People might actually get out and do stuff. Realise tv isn't so great after all.

Netflix and D+ haven't had any substantial new material for a while anyway

Can I assume that won't affect the many TV shows and films which come from Korea and are imported into Netflix etc, most of which generally seem to vastly out-perform the US made material they compete against?

At a time where there is such a massive public dissatisfaction with material coming from the majority of studios, as seen by a huge drop in box office figures, I find it difficult to see the general public in the US being too upset by this and irrespective of the validity of any strikes, I can't help but feel this is going to be a "cut your nose off to spite your face" moment for a lot of Hollywood writers i.e. - they're not popular to society, their stories are flopping everywhere, they are replaceable and they want to cost companies even more money to fund even more potential failure - every studio involved will be taking a good look at these folks and deciding "this could be the perfect time to replace this whole group and move on to a new group who as 'new starters' we can then pay less".

I suppose it comes down to how much studios want to make money again over supporting/reinforcing proven failures.

Although I agree that the writers should be paid more, I also agree with a lot of the posters on here about the PC-gone-mad ("woke") wave that has infested Hollywood since around early 2019.

Also, there have been changes throughout history. We had the Industrial Revolution that gave rise to factories. Jobs were lost but new jobs were created. Electricity came around in the late 1800s, again losing and creating jobs. Cinema (which is the bleeding topic of this thread) came along in the early 1900s, again destroying and creating jobs. Ditto with radio, video, telephones, computers and the internet.

Video killed the radio star.
Internet killed the video star.
AI killed the internet star - bye bye influencers :D

As for AI in the film writing industry, ChatGPT could be used to invent up stories in which the writers could see as a draft then expand on it. The same as AI being used to create artworks. Artists can use these generated artworks as drafts or a line-art and build up on that.

Do people seriously want AI written movies?

God no, what would be the most likely change in the short-term whilst AI is in its infancy would, I think, be as Pawnless Endgame mentioned - AI comes up with the core idea, humans then "polish" the idea to make it useable - and I think thats possibly valid for most things which needs to be done as "written language" (rather than improv/off the cuff/live etc) so not just TV/Film scripts but song lyrics, news articles, academic work, clerical work etc.

As over used but funny as the meme is - I welcome our AI overlords :D
