Adblockers

I use adblocker for videos as having a 2 minute advert that can't be skipped after 15/30 seconds or so on 5 catchup as an example is utterly retarded, especially when its every 15 minutes or so as well.

As for youtube, I wouldn't mind if all adverts could be skipped after 5 seconds, but the current trend is to make them unskippable, making adblock become the norm.

I use adblocker and ghostify. If websites want to refuse to serve me content because of that, that's their prerogative.

Generally I hate ads, and am willing to pay for services rather than fund them via personal data plus ads.

I've noticed an abundance of ads that auto direct you to the App Store leaving the website useless.

Its a shame as ads like these cause issues and effect the legitimate ads around.

As I posted on the previous page, google 4od adblocker and there's a working chrome extension for it! Their adverts never really streamed very well for me, despite programs having no problems, so it's helped me out a lot!

I believe they are pretty massive to be fair.

What makes you say that?

Adsense doesn't allow ads that scroll with the content. Big no no unless you're one of their premium publishers then I don't know what the rules are but its invite only with at least 20,000,000 page views per month. (Ill have to double check but I don't think adsense even allows their ads on pages with any companies scrolling ads).

I'm assuming the side bars are ads rather than just javascript links.

My ad tipping point came many moons ago, on the ITV-F1 forums. A flash ad played every new page you opened (which given this was a public forum, was extremely frequently), it played some nonsense soundbite "ou est la rascasse *engine noise!!!!*"... Not sure what year this was, plenty long ago though.

That was me done afterwards. I don't care how good your site is, there's a chance your adverts will be the most intrusive, annoying rubbish ever. I'd rather not take the risk.
Blame the people advertising for the state of play today. People wouldn't block these things if they hadn't started ripping the ****.

I rememember back in the day before I used adblock when those annoying flash smiley adverts and the sound HEEEELLLLLOOOO!!!!! played at almost double the current desktop volume. Adblock is a godsend as adverts where getting increasingly more annoying, intrusive and expoilted bugs in browsers by having multiple popup windows, mouse function disabling and adverts that couldn't really be closed unless you used alt+f4.

Then there's the whole virus/adware issue when you report these things to the site owners they either ignore you, deny it's their site with the issue or want you to basiaclly do their job for them in reporting what advert is causing trouble.

The one time I did get a adware I asked an admin of a site for support and he basically said I need the money to run the site, ads nothing to do with him not his problem. I replied saying I'll use and adblocker on your site or not bother visiting it no more and got a rage reply stating how I was a thief, a leech and loads of other profanities.

I replied: So I'm a leech, thief whatever for running adblock and shouldn't visit your site if I can't support it by loading the sites ads. Well okay if you can't afford to run a website with without having overly intrusive/virus/adware ridden adverts then maybe you shouldn't be running a website.(Didn't get a reply after this but people where posting on the forums about the site problems)

I reformatted my computer installed adblock and now I don't have to deal with this anymore. :)

What I'm also seeing is an increasing number of site's now have the most annoying popup with the do you need help/ask a question/ take our survey, fill out our questionaire. I clicked on of these site feedback form's once and there was 4 pages of questions.

Long term Adblock user set to nerf all adverts and proud of it. I despise advertising in all shapes and forms, from adverts on tv (pre-record and fast forward past them), flyers in magazines, junk mail through the letter box (if there's a pre-paid return envelope I stuff as much junk in there and post it back) to random pop-ups/banners/videos on the internet.

If I want a product/service, I'll look for it myself thanks - don't clutter up my display with cack I'm not remotely interested in.

If I visit a site that moans about adblocker then I simply shut that page down and don't visit it again.

Seriously, if you think using an ad blocker is somehow immoral or taking money from someone, you really need to get a grip :)

Seriously, if you can't see how using an ad blocker detracts from the profits of a publisher, you really need to educate yourself. :)

Not at all - the adverts are still there regardless of whether I use an ad-blocker or not. The site still gets money from the advertisers. I chose not to view them on my screen via my internet connection.

Then you really do need to educate yourself. If you use an adblocker then the adverts aren't served, not simply hidden from view. The publisher makes no money from their inventory if you use an adblocker.

Well every day is a school day!! I'm still going to continue to use adblocker though and have a 100% clear conscience :)

I use adblocker in IE and Firefox - works wonders. Pages load quicker and no more annoying loud and irritating flash type adverts.

One think I have also noticed is just how much more IE crashes without adblocker. At work we have pretty nice computers yet IE will become unresponsive and it always seems to be the adverts that cause it.
