Not sure if this is the right place, but I'll go for it anyway.

All of my new pc bits arrived today, including one of these

To be used as a storage drive.
Now, I thought before I build my new machine, I'll put this drive into my old one and save all of my stuff from my old ide and sata drives on to this new one.

Problem - windows fails to boot and gives me a BSOD.

As soon as I disconnect the new hdd everything is fine again.

A quick look in the bios reveals an empty entry for the new drive.

I have an older 250gb maxtor sata as my os drive and an older ide as a data (this last has all of my music etc on it).

I was under the impression that SATA just figures it out and works without all of that tedious business of master / slave etc.

The new drive has jumper pins - for PUIS and limits PHY to 3gbs.

mobo is asus m2n32 sli delux.

The new drive also squeals a lot.

What am I missing ocuk?
Is my mobo just too old for this drive, or am I missing some setting or other?

Closer inspection of my mobo reveals sata 3.0gbs... maybe I need some jumpers on this new drive to limit it to 3.0gb/s from 6.0gb/s?

Try using a jumper to limit the drive to 3.0gb/s.

Does the drive have a molex power and SATA power? When I used to power SATA drives off a molex they used to make a squeal sound, never did the squeal with the SATA power connector.

Thanks for the reply.

Gonna get some jumpers this afternoon.

Drive is SATA power only.
However I ran the feed from a molex plug with a SATA adapter iirc (am at work now, so will check later.)

Hmm, tried the drive with jumper to limit to 3gb/s - no dice. I even fed it from a separate power rail.

The drive does not show up in the bios at all - there's a blank space under SATA2 and in the drive spec it shows 0 capacity 0 cylinder etc.

Bios shows primary and slave ide (cd-rom and ide hdd) and it shows SATA1 (main boot drive).
But this new one just doesn't play ball.

It squeals a lot too like it's trying to read the drive, then I either get a reboot or pc gets to windows splash screen then it BSOD.

Gonna take this new drive round to a friends place later to see if it's accessible on his newer machine - if not then I'm gonna assume the drive is ******, and look into an rma.
Still - hopefully I'm missing something obvious.

Drive is dead.

Failed to show on my mates machine also. Makes an awful screeching sound.
Wonder if postie dropped it?
Everything else in my new build seems fine (fingers crossed) just this HDD that's borked.
Meh, nevermind - RMA here we come. :(

Just a quick thank you to OcUK -

I RMA'd my drive on monday.

Today a replacement was delivered before 12. It is now in my machine and chugging along quite nicely.

Great stuff!
