Hi,

I just purchased a NETGEAR WPN824 v2 Router and installed it onto my computer in under 10mins, the reason i purchased this was so i can share the connection with another computer (using a ethernet wire - dont require the wireless feature for this)

Im just confused as to how i go about sharing the internet connection? im on NTL. i have 3 ports free in the router so i can add another 3 computers, but how do i do this?

I want it setup so my computer does not have to be switched on in order for the other computer to share the connection.

Please help.

Thanks.

If you have enabled DHCP on the router then just plug one end of an ethernet cable into one of the spare ports on the router and the other into the PC. That should be it.

NTL Modem ---> WAN port on router ---> Other PC's, then either use a static IP for each PC, preferably one that doesn't conflict with the DHCP range of the router if it's enabled or use DHCP. By using static IP's port forwarding is possible as and when you need it.

thanks for your replies,

networking is VERY new to me, so could you please explain HOW i would do this please? please by step - by -step

OK, DHCP is enabled by default on the router according to the manual so the simplest solution is to just plug in another PC to the router and (Assuming you are running XP) Click Start, Settings, Network Connections, Local Area Connection, Select 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then 'Properties' and make sure 'Obtain an IP address automatically is selected, then do the same for the DNS options further down. Click OK and then OK agian now each PC should use the router to connect to the internet and doesn't require your PC to be on.

You could log into the router by typing 192.168.1.1 and using 'admin' and 'password' to log in, changeing the password would be my first suggestion.

Thanks just tried it and it works.

The only small problem i have is im a user of DC++ (p2p sharing program) and cant download anything from that anymore? it worked perfect before the router was installed.

any ideas?

Don't know if this will match your version of DC++, as I just googled it...

Open DC++, go file>settings, go here: http://www.whatsmyip.org/ and copy and paste your ip address into the 'IP' text box, then enter 1412 in the 'port (empty=random)' box. click ok, then close DC++.

Now we need to forward this port you just set. Open browser, go to 192.168.1.1 which should open up your router settings. Click on port forwarding/port triggering, click port forwarding radio button, click add custom service, under service name type DC++, service type should be TCP/UDP, starting port: 1412, ending port 1412, server ip address: (to find this go to start>run, type cmd, then ipconfig/all at the command prompt - where it says IP address, this is where you need to enter into the server ip address box) then click apply.

This should be done, go here: http://www.whatsmyip.org/ports/ type 1412 into the custom port test, and click check port. (It should say it's open).

If it does, exit all windows, restart DC++ and all should be hunky dory.

Thanks so much, just did it and worked first time no problems. Your a star.

As you seem to know your things about networking i have another question for you, how do i go about sharing certain folders between computers? I have gone to my network places, and the second computer is not shown on there, (yet internet sharing is working on bother computer no problems) and how can i access the shared folder on the other computer?

Thanks again you helped a lot,

Vijay

Do you know the name of the other computer?
If not, right-clik My Computer > Computer Name Tab > Full Computer name - remember it (not the full-stop at the end :p).
Try this:

Start > Run > now type the following: \\full computer name as you read above.

This should access the shared folder - if not, setup a network neighbourhood.

Start > My network places (which I hope you have - if not, right click taskbar and customise the start menu allowing my network places to be seen) > setup a small or home office network > This computer connects to a residential gateway (middle option) > next > next > Finish (or something like that).

Then try Start > Run > \\computername again.

thanks for your reply,

ive done that on my computer ad i can now access my shared folders when i run \\computer name

i have also done the setup as described on the second computer and tried to run \\computer name of the second computer on my computer but i just get "network path was not found"

any ideas?
