Adding memory to an overclockers GA-X58A-UD3R system

Hey,

I bought a pre-overclocked system from overclockers some years ago. Its a I7 system, running @ 3.8Ghz, with 6GB of mem. I'm still happy with the CPU performance, and I've changed the main drive to be SSD so it boots up quickly enough. Swapped out the graphics cards a while back for an overclockers sourced Nvidia 970.

Problem is, I bought fallout 4, and it needs 8GB of Ram. The ram supplied by overclockers in the system is 3x2GB, which are a matched set. Obviously OC clocked my machine according to the spec of the ram.

So What ram should I buy to increase the memory. Crucial's website is suggesting 2x4GB, but the manual for the board says you can't have 5 memory sockets filled, so I'd need to remove my 6GB, which doesn't seem great. And of course with my system being overclocked, I'd be frightened that the settings won't be compatible with the new memory and might fry them. For example my memory says 1.65V, but crucial is suggest 1.35V or 1.5V memory.

I've attached a few pictures of some of the relevant bios screens, and of the memory modules that are currently in my machine.

Ideally, I'd like a good increase, but if the answer is to buy 3 exact same modules again, which would get me up to 12 GB, then I'll do it...but are these modules still available ?

Any help or advise would be appreciated.

You could try buying the same RAM again but would need to get it 2nd hand. You could also sell your own and buy 4x4GB. I have 4x4GB (1.5V) in my old X58 board.

I'm crap at overclocking, but I do believe the RAM could directly affect the overclock, your board is x58 so its triple channel, hence why you have 3x2gb , I have 3x4gb. however it will also run in dual channel, so you could remove a 1 dim and add another pair. personally I would either try and find the matching dims. you could also get these and remove your old RAM, again I'm not good enough to say how this would affect the overclock.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £67.68
(includes shipping: £8.70)

Just buy 2x4Gb and run it two of your 2Gb dims to give you 12Gb in dual channel, this is what I have done on my ga-x58a-ud3r. Using dual channel over triple channel in general use you will never notice the difference.

I had the exact same question over 2 years ago. This was my answer from OCUK. One of those memory links is a discontinued product. But added it in there anyway.

typically you will find that changing the RAM in an overclocked system will mean that the overclock will need to be adjusted to maximise stability with the new hardware. As you say, the i7 920 is getting fairly old now, it will have been available 5 years come November.
This board supports up to 24GB of system RAM. For best performance we would use three matching modules in triple channel per RAM bank rather than two matched modules on dual channel, but you can run dual channel.
From Gigabytes listed specification it appears to support a maximum of 4GB modules, so two 4GB modules in Dual channel would give you the 8GB and four would give you 16GB.
Putting RAM in both banks is more likely to impact on the maximum achievable overclock.

So long as your CPU cooler is not large and therefore would be obstructed by tall RAM, we would suggest looking at this from Corsair...

Three of these are less likely to impact drastically on the overclock (though it may still need slight tweaks), and would give you 12GB.

If you have a large cooler and so can only use standard height RAM, we would suggest looking at this kit from Kingston...

Where you could go for one, two or three kits of this giving you lots of flexibility how you configure your RAM, but at an increased chance of it impacting on the overclock configuration.

erm, some seem to forget that GA-X58A-UD3R is a triple channel system... it may not work properly with only two dimms.... ??

also 5 years later, many dimms are not made any more... ???

MaXxBoulton: and your real name is homer simpson?? it a **bit** more than that... it also wont fit in my mobo! ...

I dont get your refrance to homer Simpson? If your saying I am loves all round the world by millions so take it.

x5650's are going for 20 shop round. Look at the 5650 thread on the forums.

yeah, everyone loves this guy, but the computer salesman **really** loves him!! :P in 2010 he paid $5,000 for a PC!!

yeah sure I can get any cpu... one no longer available (trust?? a nice Xeon X5650 box, with a brick inside..)

and no support for finding a good mobo to fit it in, or any chance of finding good memory, good graphics, etc, etc,etc,etc....

at least some are like 'comic book guy'.. aaaah, the old days when 1.5 meg T1 was super super fast.. ;)
