Adding more RAM to pre-overclocked machine...

Hi there,

I'm after a bit of help if I may... I want to add some more RAM to my machine due to increased use of things life After Effects + the relatively good price at the min, but have been putting it off for ages due to my overclock.

I bought a pre-built & pre-overclocked machine from Overclockers a few years back, and they said that adding RAM would invalidate any help they can give you with the overclock, plus I think that I will need to re-do it. I'm really happy with the overclock as it is, as I've never had an issue with it, so really don't want to change it.

So, my question - if I add RAM how do I get my overclock back to 'normal'?

System specs are;

Mobo - Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 (Socket 1366)
CPU - Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz @ 4ghz
RAM - Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel (CMX6GX3M3A1600C9)
PSU - 750w BeQuiet! Dark Power Pro
GPU - MSI GTX670 TwinFrozr OC

As above I currently have 3x2GB sticks, and I'd be looking at getting another set of the same RAM as I already have, so 6x2gb. It's the CMX6GX3M3A1600C9 stuff (here - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-205-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1389)

Thanks for the help!

Getting 4Ghz on that chip isn't hard, AFAIK you'd only need to up the RAM Voltage slightly wait for a second response though.

You should be able to slot in another three sticks of RAM and boot straight up without any modification to BIOS settings at all, especially as the RAM is exactly the same type :D

I added 16GB (2x 8GB) of RAM to my system a few weeks ago, and it booted right up. Overclock was the same, memory settings were the same, I just had more of it :)

Hi guys,

Thanks for that, sounds positive! I just noticed too in the Reviews section of the RAM on OC, someone says that he's adding it to a pre-overclocked system like me... he says;

"My concern was that of the issues often reported within overclock forums of losing speed from the overclock or general issues with 6 x 2gb sticks rather than 3 x 4gb. My concerns were however unwarrented as I dropped the sticks in and it booted first time with no issues with the existing overclock. Although I did have to relax the spd timings to 9-9-9-28."

I really shouldn't have put this off for so long!!

As above :) You might have to nudge one or two voltage settings up very very slightly, but it should be fine without.

If you have any trouble with all 6 sticks installed, just make a thread and someone will help you out and tell you what you need to do :D

Whatever you do, make sure to keep the voltage between QPI and DRAM within 0.5v.

*delete* cant read :p

I read that as 0.05V :rolleyes:

The QPI and DRAM voltage will be within 0.5V. The stock QPI is 1.2, intel recommend a maximum of 1.35V so it wont be higher than that, and the RAM is rated at 1.65V.

Dont worry bud, just slot it in and fire her up. All the settings its already on should be fine, if not let us know as me n' Hyburnate said earlier. :)

Well I added the extra sticks and all seems well! Bios didn't mention it, overclock didn't seem to care and Windows just kinda shrugged and got on with it =P

Thanks for the help though guys, very much appreciated :)
