Additional NAS

I have run out of space on my Synology DS211 and am going to probably fill it up if I move from the current 2TB in RAID1 so 1TB to 4TB, 2TB in RAID1.

I don't really see the price point of the 3TB disks at the moment as being acceptable.

I use the NAS for streaming my movie and TV show collection along with iTunes and pictures.

What would be a good second hand NAS to purchase purely for main PC backup and the picture storage?

Looking for something around the £100 mark then slot some disks into it if it didn't come with any.

If you have an old/new PC there is Freenas OS available, based on Linux this may be an option.

Not sure if it works on a Atom but if does how about one of these babies http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-276-OK&groupid=43&catid=1896&subcat= with a couple of drives running FreeNas.
Only down side on this is it only has two SATA ports, but you could add an additional controller card or use the USB ports! In the spec it doesn't say if it's got a network connection or what speed either but I suppect it will have one though? Also I'm not sure how power efficient it maybe compared to commercial NAS, 180Watts PSU suggests that it won’t be that bad! Perhaps somebody from Overclockes could advise on other low cost barebone systems which may fit the bill?

Not tried FreeNAS yet myself but on my to do list as I'm too looking at creating/buying a NAS. I sure that most of commercial NAS’s run a similar operating system to that of FreeNAS?

From the Web SiteFreeNAS is an embedded open source NAS (Network-Attached Storage) distribution based on FreeBSD, supporting the following protocols: CIFS (samba), FTP, NFS, TFTP, AFP, RSYNC, Unison, From the iSCSI (initiator and target) and UPnP.
It supports Software RAID (0,1,5), ZFS, disk encryption, S.M.A.R.T/email monitoring with a WEB configuration interface (from m0n0wall).
FreeNAS can be installed on Compact Flash/USB key, hard drive or booted from LiveCD.

the onboard network card on mine has failed already :( put a nice intel card in it though. (the atom barebones linked above that is )

Just installed FreeNAS as VMWare virtual machine on a server I have, first impressions is that it is fairly straight forward to install and setup a simple windows compatible share. I haven't yet tried the uPnP as I haven't a uPnP client in my test environment.

If the Atom box I referred to in an early post is i386 compatible it should at least install, BUT and a big BUT even if it installs I'm not sure if it has the correct drivers for the network card? Perhaps somebody from the forum who has one of these boxes could try FreeNas, they don’t have to install it just boot from CD and configure the IP address and then see if you can ping it from another machine:D?

I'm sure it will be, even if it's a crappy Realtek.

I tried to check the Foxconn site:

Something along the lines you have mentioned is too big for where it needs to be stored.

It needs to be small like the QNAP or Synology type boxes.

the same happened to me, then I built a machine to run unraid. now running 5 drives in there and a ds210j, once I get some of the apps installed on unraid I will shut down the ds210j and put it to one side.
