Adele asks Spotify to remove the random button (for albums)

Does spotify shuffle play the tracks in oder of popularity by default - potentially making more money for Adele.

Is this 30 album one of those commericialized albums front loading the tracks in the first 30s where the revenue is accrued too.

e: Quadrophenias a voyage requiring correct track order

There are some that are stories but they are definitely a huge minority (Mind.in.a.box are a band I love that is a story, Coheed and Cambria is another one that springs to mind)

I shuffle albums all the time, usually when I'm doing something that won't fit in a full album (like cooking) so I don't just listen to the start of albums over and over again.

To all those that say to listen to songs in order, does that also apply to albums too? As I can think of a couple of bands whose songs across an album tell a story but each album also continues that story.

What about listening to genre playlists?

It seems an odd point of view to me as, outside of the first 2 or 3 times of a new album, I’m always listening on shuffle and more often than not genre shuffle. I like the variation of switching through subgenres as I listen.

If it only affects her albums and not if her songs are in playlists then meh. It doesn’t really change much anyway. Not that I’ll be listening to Adele anytime soon anyway.

Utter bullcrap. If she wants people to only listen to her album in that order (which is absolute nonsense, people paid for it they can listen to it however they want) then release your albums as one long track.

Random can still be used on albums btw, just have to pick a track to start and have it on shuffle.
soon the artists will add advert tracks you can't skip

If anyone understands the importance of what an “album” truly it is ALL of us in the #ShinedownFamily
The fact that Adele was able to get Spotify to remove the shuffle button on album pages is massive. Simply put, albums do tell a story whether they are conceptual, or not. They are a snapshot, “a window in time” into the hearts, and minds of the artist.
Now some opinions may reflect the question of why does it matter? It matters because it gives value back to the music, and the artist. Ultimately it comes down to respect. So with that being said, we applaud you Adele, and Spotify... MUCH RESPECT
So yes it does matter to the artist.
Personally I have never used the shuffle button in any streaming service, I always play albums as albums, as complete works of art, probably because I grew up playing LPs and then CDs.

I wouldn't exactly call myself an artist but I've done a ton of video game modding over the years including creating custom levels - I find that perspective as per Shinedown and so on closed minded. Much of my motivation was in people finding some enjoyment in my work - even if the appreciation comes from something subjective or personal for the beholder.

Personally I find it disrespectful to demand someone appreciates it in a specific way - respect which means anything goes both ways, though I appreciate it when someone understands it with an insight into what motivated me.

Many albums I listen to have tracks that continue a theme into the next track. Some even have the very start of the next track at the end of another. The order of songs on an album will be intentionally chosen by the artist for many reasons so I would never listen to an album on shuffle.

Some of my favourite albums I’ve listened to so many times the flow of one song to the next is important, it’s part of the album experience. Listening to Hybrid Theory on shuffle is just bizarre for example.

Which is quite like a book: having a chapter, or excerpt or even just a sentence that is particularly meaningful or enjoyable.

But picking those highlights out of an album isn't the same as listening to the whole thing on random play. Which is surely psychopathic or something

It's like dancing about architecture, to quote Uncle Frank.

I fully get that you might listen to West Side Story or Tosca in order, as it is a story. I accept that convention means you would listen to a sonata or concerto in a given order- and there are god reasons to do that.

I struggle to think of any pop/rock music that benefits from being listened to in a given order. Indeed, every (?) album I have ever heard has at least one filler track on it.

Give me a "best of", any day...

Most really. Many albums have interludes, bridging songs, slow and heavy songs. They will be intentionally put in an order to have a flow and journey through the album.

It’s the same thing when you go to a concert, the set order will be specifically picked to create an experience.
