ADSL Connectivity Issues

Hi guys just looking for a quick fix for a problem that has been plaguing me for the past week.

Since last thursday I have been experiencing an inability to connect to my adsl at home during the hours 10am-10pm the error being shown as "phone line busy" a few things ive noticed since this problem started are an increased amount of noise on the telephone line and the fact I can hear the adsl modem dialling when using the telephone at the same time.

I have been in contact with my isp(AOL) & telephone provider (BT), aol basically said that it sounds like a line problem and to get in touch with BT. Which I did only for them to run a line fault test and find the line to be operating fine.

Any advice on what to do next would be greatly appreciated.

If your phone works, so should your internet. AOL deal with internet, BT deal with the phone. Just shout at them untill they do something.

It sounds like it could be a filtering problem, in which case AOL should be able to help you/ send you new filters if they're covered in the package. You just gotta pin them down or they'll fob you off.

Cheers for the tips guys I have made in interesting discovery it seems the connectivity issue is time sensitive in that im able to connect 10pm - 10am but not 10am - 10pm.

Regarding the filter's I have tried 4 different ones in total 3 in aol package and one I had borrowed from a family member all with the same result.

If I attempt to connect after 10pm the modem connects fine but windows says "limited or no connectivity" if then someone tries to make a call using the same phone line the adsl gets disconnected and will not reconnect until the phone call is finished.

Personally I think there's something wrong on the adsl side of the phone line... this was eventually confirmed by aol 2nd line tech support who said that they will escalate the issue for BT to do a check on the broadband side rather than the telephone side.

So as it stands im able to connect 10pm-10am as long as I dont make a phone call, and I'm currently waiting for a phone call from BT regarding a possible fault on the broadband side of my phone line.

/me not happy :(

Sorry for not posting quicker but I've not been able to connect untill 2day at all.

Been onto AOL again informing them of the 10pm to 10am connection and they said they'd forward the info onto BT for another line test which came back as the line being fine yet again.

So me getting a bit of earache off the missus decided sod it ill do my own research and this is what ive found out :-

Service was 512k but we recieved a letter around xmas to say our service would be upgraded to 1mb free of charge and no increase in monthly payments, however all speed tests I carried out after xmas pointed to the fact I was still on 512k.

Since these problems have started I've realised the modem is sync'ing at 1mb as well as the fact that my line stats have deteriated, was a line attenuation of 55-58db with a SNR of 10-15 now on the 1mb service I get a line attenuation of 61-63db and a SNR of 2-8.

So armed with these figures I rang AOL once again who said they would once again pass on the info to BT for yet another test.

So im not sure where to go now, I was thinking either manually regrade to 512kb or get one of those NET5 filter faceplates / yank the ringwire out of the socket.

Ideas?

P.S Will post back with results from latest BT test if I can still get online

With an SNR of 2 you're bound to have disconnects. Sounds like AOL need to get you regraded back to 512Kbit to give you any kind of reliability.

BT have told me that if your line has a noise level of above 60db then you are unlikely to receive broadband, maybe the increased noise is due to the upgrade and your line cant handle 1mb speed. Ask them to take it back to 512k and if they will, test the noise and connectivity at 512k.

How did you test your line noise? (58db)

It isn't noise - it's an attenuation. SNR margin will go down with increasing speed, attenuation will stay (more or less) the same.

Plenty of folks with attenuation above 60dB that get a perfectly viable service though...

Right not sure if the latest test passed or failed but I did receive a phone call from BT stating that an engineer visit was required, so this wednesday hopefully things will be resolved.

I did ask if there was a charge involved to which the reply was that it depends on my ISP... as such im just about to give em a ring to find out if there is any charge.

Wish me luck :)

*edit currently sync'd @ 1mbps attenuation = 60db snr = 3 connection time = 40mins and counting

Well Bt engineer has been and gone and surprise surprise no problems with the line.

I awoke this morning to find the net had been stable for 12hrs+ and line stats were 60db attenuation and 15db SNR.

I tried to get the engineer to fit a filter faceplate but he had none on the van :(

Anyway im currently sync'd @ 1mb with the above stats so as long as it stays this way ill be happy.

*Engineer reckons the MaxDSL enablement might have had something to do with my net connection playing up seems as it started around april 1st and has been resolved around 10days later.

Thank you all for the advice :)

Btw I'm 2.27km from my exchange AMDX23800+
