I work for a small company, and due to this and the fact that I have experience (although not a huge amount) in SEO I am in charge of our SEO activities.

We recently re-branded (complete overhaul of website and copy) which in itself proved a challenge in retaining our current rankings but also gave the opportunity to start from scratch as it were.

To cut a long story short, we're one of the best at what we do: copywriting. As such our aim is high: to be on the first page if not higher for our main keywords. These include (Google.com link position in brackets): copywriters (3), copywriter (250+), copywriting (13) and copywriting agency (2).

As you can see, 'copywriter' is letting the team down. Even after focusing on this more heavily in tags, titles and copy, and introducing new pages and a blog, we seem to do nothing but slip: something that is baffling me to no end.

My confusion is also predominantly around Google's views of words. For instance, a search for copywriting will display the word copywriter in bold, which as I'm led to believe means that Google's used that word to determine the search rankings in conjunction with the actual search term. And this is why I can't understand how we're so high for certain phrases and so low for others which Google treats as similar.

Obviously I don't want to link to the site but the 2nd link for "copywriting agency" is the page in question (company initials SC).

Any help, advice and tips would be hugely appreciated as I really am at a bit of a loss! A detailed explanation (or link to an article) of how Google treats similar words would be great too. Many thanks in advance :).

2) Register a Pro account at SEOMoz
3) Be willing to spend many, many hours on the optimization project

or

4) Hire a professional

SEO is not quick, and isn't performed by going on 'tips'.
 
I just Googled the keywords you mentioned and it appears you aren't currently ranking for copywriting or copywriter on Google.com (in the top 200), position 31 for copywriters though.

Are you logged in to your Google account? It might be giving preference to your site. If not, then I guess it's just a temporary fluctuation.

The guy who wrote it is well known as being a very good SEO/copywriter

According to yahoo, your site only has roughly 130 inbound links - which is a pretty tiny amount, i'm guessing the anchor text of these links aren't heavily copywriter orientated (although I haven't checked). It would be worth focusing more on yhour link building efforts than purely the copy on site, as more often than not this is the most important factor in rankings for competitive keywords.

If you have an SEO moz pro account, you can run a linkscape analysis to pull out the anchor text of your links, to speed up the process
 
Thanks for your help both. We have looked at a number of SEO specialists but are yet to find one who we really trust - SEO being such a 'fluffy around the edges' service.

The site is #13 on Google.com for "copywriting" and #3 for "copywriters" (not logged into an account) so perhaps you're looking at the wrong website?

I'll give that article a read now - thanks for the link :).
