Advice for work!

based it after tax and on a 9.30 - 6

but the hours are actually more flexible and a lot longer but its all prorata hence just working on a average 9-5

I'm sure you know that's not the way it works ;)

I think your wage sounds reasonable for a starting point, what scope is there for better rates? what are other people earning with the same skills & input?

my equiv skills ect in a city would get me a minimum of £22 with the same living costs, thats also my kinda problem

the job is editor, cameraman, dop, equipment tech, course teacher, ect... its not just a paper pushing or unskilled job, i can save them £2k alone with a website right out the bat, I kinda feel like Id earn them a pretty penny in 12months

£15k?

I've honestly not seen any grad jobs that low...but then I only look at IT related ones which on average are 20k+

IT, Law, Accountancy etc usually pay more, I cba to search for it but there was a thread a while back showing starting Grad salaries and someone posted one around the £15k mark. I was also shocked as when I looked I didn't see any quite that low. :)

You should be glad they are actually keeping you thus keeping you in job ! Welcome to the real world of earning money and then having some of it taken away - You may think your being hard done too but you will soon progress (earnings wise) past what your currently on so just suck it up and get on with it man !

Aye, I automatically think IT based jobs...so see it as being low. :p

As for the OP...that sounds like you're being paid a lot for the work you do.

im only asking for £7.50 an hour in a skilled job, thats not too much to ask is it?!

you would be getting more than that working a regular 38 hour week wouldnt you?

and anyway...welcome to tax and not being a student anymore.

Also just be happy you have a job that doesnt pay all that badly for someone with nott a lot of p[revious job experience.

collegues,

no other tech guys just me

bosses 35k each
project manager 23k

work mate started same time but does more course organising so different to me less skill 17.5k

phone girl 15k

So it sounds like they are offering the right salary, I don't see a problem at all.

doing what?

My placement or in general, as I stated above, I automatically thought IT jobs, which for the vast majority of graduate ones do earn £20k+.

My placement on £15k was a general IT tech job at Surrey Uni.

Yeh probably the case. Although graduate jobs vary wildy. I was looking into virgin media positions and they were only offering 15k starting!

and to the OP. Have they said that your salary will go up at all in the future?
Ive started on £17k coming out of Uni which isnt loads but I dont have to travel into london and its only a 20 minute drive with free parking which is a big plus! They have also said it will go up to 18k+ next year. It's not great but with things as they are i'm gonna stick it out for at least a year, maybe two. job market is pretty tough at the moment.

If you don't think you will find anything better i would just take it and build up working experience whilst looking elsewhere in the near future? That is my plan anyway.

rmember your student loan is money youve already spent, i would calculate how better off you are with the new wage taking your Tax & NI into consideration and ignoring your loan - your loan will end eventually!
