Well hello , people of Overclockers....

New to the Forums, Needed some advice , and after reading some of your forum threads, i decided this was the best place to come..

So I am building a Gaming Rig I have a budget of around £700 the specs of everything I can get are below.

I5 2500k Processor
500gb 3gb/s hard drive
560 ti 1gb graphics card
zalman z9 plus tower
asus p8p67 LE rev 3 main board
thermaltake frio cooler
4 gb 1600 xms3 ram
700w PSU

I have been out of the Pc world for a few years, the xbox was fine, but i have noticed the poor quality - Frames per second, playability - of recent titles, so i am selling the box and buying a pc. The Pc will be used for heavy excel work and other applications photoshop, but nothing too intensive, it is predominantly a gaming rig.

The question i have is , Will the 4gb 1600 be enough to run the latest games on well - battlefield 3 , Skyrim, Deus ex, the only other option i have is going for 8gb 1333.

I do intend to do a small over clock on the cpu, I heard that it is relatively easy to do.

I have looked for the answers online, but i see a lot of contradicting views, I just need someone that knows that can help me out with the desicion.

So yeah basically, Corsair 4gb 1600 or 8gb of a cheaper brand 1333??? - If the 4gb 1600 is fine, I am happy to upgrade at a later date when i have the available funds.

Cheers in advance

Peace

Yes the 4GB of Corsair 1600MHZ RAM is enough.

Overclocking the 2500K is simples, just up the CPU multiplier from 33X100= 3300MHZ to say 40X100=4000MHZ, bingo!! instant 4GHZ

Whats the make and model of the PSU your looking at?

Wow, that was an insane response...

So overclocking is as simple as that!!? Do i need to turn anything off on the board, Turbo V and all that Jazz!??

Do i need to do anything with the ram?? Been reading a bout voltages on the Xms being too high!!

Its absolute childs play, if you cant get 4GHZ out of it then you have been massively unlucky, 4.5GHZ seems to be the average speed that people get out of them without even trying.

Heres a OC guide using a similar ASUS board - http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2011/01/07/how-to-overclock-the-intel-core-i5-2500k/3

The rated voltages of the XMS3 is fine for Sandybridge.

Yo belial is the Xigmatek Asgard case any good? I could save a few pounds if i get that case, but I do not want to sacrifice on cooling, the Zalman comes with 3 cheeky fans, and room for anoter 3 i think !!

would you switch to Midgard to save a few pound, or stick with the zalman!!?

Stick with the Zalamn Z9 or there is the Antec100 or Coolermaster elite430.

The Asgard is crap.

Yeah i have been seeing everywhere that 2500k is a beast for overclocking, I would be happy with around 4ghz ;)

Ok while Im at it , i might as well pick your brains!!!

Ok so im selling the box to get a monitor, Do i go LCD, LED? I have around £100

Also, until i get a monitor, I already have a viewsonic VP171 17inch, Had it with my old comp back in the day....

I was reading - once again- that running at lower resolutions like 1280 x 1024, will not force the graphics card to run at its potential , and could possibly limit performance, in games!!

Is this true, its not a biggy, but I would just like to know, for example if BFBC2 runs like crap, I will have a reason why, or will i see no real performance downgrade!!?

You can use DVI-D for blu-ray etc, HDMI doesnt provide a better picture, is useful if you have a console, and you can also carry a sound signal across it too.

At around the £100 region resolution is all that counts really. LED wouldnt hurt i suppose, less power usage and such but not a huge improvement. Well worth a bit more LG are doing a ips panel for around the £150 region which is incredible! LG IPS231P-BN

Ram ensure its 1.5v any higher and may cause instability in overclocks - sandybridges are recommended for 1.5v (4gb is all you need unless you intend video editing and the like)

Antec 100 or one of the silverstone ps range would make the best case. PS02, ps03...
All very good for cooling purposes.

asus p8p67 LE instead of this take a ganders at the msi GD53 ... cheaper and better technically, comes with dual 8*8 pci rails so you can sli your gfx card at a later date if you like.

What psu? dont cheap out if it goes your pc will probably follow so worth spending the extra on a more reliable one....plus for what you envisage so far 700w is more than you would need.....500w would be enough.....650w for a bit of future proofing?
