Advice needed quickly speeding issue

Slightly OT, but wth are these police card driving around with what looks like a camera out of the sunroof lol? can they catch u while moving?

Points mean prizes :D

The camera vans use laser to measure your speed coupled with a video camera as evidence of your number plate. You've most definately been caught, coming just over a hill would be a prime position for them to catch you. How long ago did you sign over the car to yourself? If fairly recent (within around a week) then the 14-day rule of which they have to send you your penalty will not apply.

I'm still waiting to see if I have been caught by a mobile camera (most certain I have been) doing 45 in a 30. Trouble is I bought the car the night before so I could be waiting a while to find out if I'm to receive points.

If they send it to the previous owner within 14 days and he tells them who he sold the car too then that doesn't work. My dad tried it with his lease company and the police phoned him up telling him he couldn't do that :p he still hasn't got the 2 fines though!

I think they're more for surveillance, the other day I saw a smart car driving about with a camera sticking out the top and it said Westminster Parking Enforcement on the side

Hmmm kk, wasnt a problem i wanst speeding, but came around a corner and there was a patrol car with this stupid camera outside the roof lol, though this was on a high risk route and being honest if i wansnt in a convoy i wuda been doing silly speeds :/

Yeah i bought the car yesterday so could be interesting.....

I am a little confused because the camera van was at the bottom of a hill on the other side of the road. I was coming from the other direction on a small part of dual carriage way at the top of the hill. I saw the camera van on the other side of the road and slowed down but not sure how quick i was going. The camera van had its back pointed up the road so i was oncoming to it although it was on the other side of the road.

Im not sure if it would get me because it would have to shoot across the other carriage way and because its down at the bottom of the hill any cars that go past it on the same side of the road as the camera van would block its site between me and it.

Anyone got any ideas on this?

The laser cannot get cars that travel away from it so it must have been focused on the oncoming lane i.e yours. I agree it sounds a little strange and isn't the norm to have the camera on the opposing lane but technically it would still work.

ANPR vans can tag vehicles that travel away from their cameras however. Did you notice any logos on the side of the van? ANPR / Safety Camera unit?

I do a LOT of miles.. I've also been done twice by camera vans in the last 18 months and seens loads and loads more.

One observation is that they are always on YOUR side of the road, if it was on the other side of a dual carriageway I think you're in the clear.

However, should you have been done you are DEFO looking at 3 points and £60.. no more, you insurance company won't give a monkeys and as long as you behave yourself you'll be fine.

Although that last statement about the insurance company might not be true if you're a newish/young driver but I'm guessing with a Z4 you're not.

I was caught years and years ago by an actual poliecman (shock!) doing 69.5 in a 40 and got 3 points, what it actually said on my speedo I dread to imagine.

Not feeling these vans at all.. when I was caught in '96 I got the message, the copper gave me a right talking to and I did slow down, I wound up with a clear licence by 2000 then I was clean until 2005 then I got a job with mega mileage and bang, october 2005 and feb 2006, both on competely empty countryside dual carriageways. 6 points.. thanks very much

Seriously mate, even if you have been caught you're fine.. its no biggy.

Hehe, I do around 1K miles a week and I'm having to take it a lot easier due to the massively increased risk of getting caught.

Do you know if i was doing over 60 will i have to go to court or can i just accept the 6 points without this. Thats my real worry!

I dont think i was doing much above this if i was but not really sure

Not true around here. I got done by one on the opposite side of the road as I was leaving Eaglescliffe near Yarm. 36 in a 30, van was parked just at the sign where it goes into NSL and flashed me when I was about 15m away from it.

Why didn't I see it? Because the sun was in my eyes and I'm a ****.

absolutely not.. court appearance is 30 over.

Try not to worry until you get the letter.......might have been setting up/packing up......sleeping...its not good to worry about the inevitable.. :D

I am trying not to worry but its hard,

I am the worrying kind of person. Its also annoying cus its a new car so probably not in my name yet and asked them to put on my private plate. Will probably take like 2 months to find out which is bad.

Just praying i was doing under 60 so if anything get 3 points :(

I know what you mean, I'm the same type of person. Once I thought I got flashed by a red light camera and I went back to that location later that day and stood watching the camera for what must have been nearly an hour, checking to see how many people who jumped the red got caught. It never flashed once and there were people who crossed the red later than I did. Suffice to say two worried weeks later and no fine.

I do have 3 points for another offence and I'm waiting to see if I'll get another 3 for my recent brush with a mobile camera. I'm in a similar situation to you in the fact that I could be waiting a while to find out. Another 3 points at 21 years old is gonna hurt!

But really it's best to try not to worry as there is absolutely nothing more you can do but wait. Just go on the premise that you have been caught and you'll be receiving 6 points, that way things can't get any worse if you do receive your fine.

Yeah i suppose.

6 points is bad but do you know if they issue 6 without having to go to court.

you're really not listening are you...

LESS THAN 30MPH OVER THE SPEED LIMIT IS 3 POINTS AND £60.

so if you were in a 40, doing 60 you are 100% in the clear (so to speak).

IF you were caught you will ONLY get 3 points.. END OF STORY.

My best man at my wedding and the man who I was best man for and my longest mate (all the same person lol) joined thames valley police about a year ago and is just doing his traffic attachment, I have gone over this in great detail with him, I know exactly what i can get away with, what I can't, and what to expect should you get caught.

I was stopped in 96 doing 69.5 in a 40, frankly driving dangerously (hey.. I was 19) and got 3 points.

The rule is 10% + 2mph anyway so they wouldn't have batted an eyelid if you were doing 46mph in the 40 anyway.. there is every likelyhood your speedo is up to 10% out so an indicated 60 is quite possibly only mid 50s anyway. It just isn't worth the courts time, effort and money to take you to court.

I was done by a mobile camera doing 42 in a 30 and got 3 points.
I was done by another mobile camera doing 85 in a 70 and got 3 points.

Both dual carriageways, they were both on my side of the road.

You really have to be giving it some serious beans or be driving like a total tool to be summonsed.
