Advice Needed

Alternatively, your stepson is a computer genius and should probably ring up Facebook and explain the security holes he's found - they'll pay a lot of money for that information.

Not as much as the naughty people!

AJK, im =telling you he does, he doesn't guess, he is very good when it comes to computers, and yes to good for his own good

Ok skidder, and the rest who have posted, ok I was vague, but ask me a serious question with reference to my original post.

One more point which I didn't say, he was also sacked from his job where he was IT Administrator, oh and yes for looking at someones email he shouldn't have

Well that doesn't make one a hacker, if he was an admin then he probably had access anyway. Hell I have access to all sorts of info which I shouldn't look at (And don't). But I COULD. It doesn't take any hacking skills to do so.

As others have said already, that doesn't mean anything. When you have administrative rights, you actually have access to things without "hacking"! Clearly your stepson is a bit delinquent though, and should be encouraged to use his computer skills responsibly - via discipline at home (your house, your rules, right?) and constructive work or pastimes elsewhere.

As I've mentioned, if he's really found security vulnerabilities in huge multinational websites, get him to contact them and explain. Most will pay. If he's just guessing his mates passwords, or some such trick, that's not gonna work.

well if he had half a brain he would use the skills he's got, but he doesn't, he is now signing on and doing much the same. and yes as pointed out he didn't hack as he had all the passwords, but still got sacked for it. his boss did all the security, asked him to try and hack it, took 10 mins and he had done it, he then asked him to try again a week later as he had done what ever he done with it and it took 30 mins and he had hacked through there security system

windows/mac desktop passwords arent security, they are easily sidestepped,
If he is that proficient with computers and he is able to log into your wife's FB acct from his phone (this is supposition as you havent really specified/dont know how he has done what he he has) then keyloggers maybe involved (a program which logs keystrokes)

I think the issue you have is access. remove his access from your technical shizzle whizzle, do a quick back up of legit peronsal data and reinstall the operating system on any compromised computers, and change all your passwords...then never let him near any of your computers again.

so in short,

remove his access to your computers,
back up personal data,
reinstalls OS/OS's
change all passwords,

and then give him a good punch up the bracket

Why do I get the feeling this 'legendary hacker' is just using a sticky note he found with mums passwords on it. My parents are the same..a note book with all passwords and logins kept next to the PC -__-

Okay, prove it. Here's a random facebook account. Ask him to "hack" it and post something creative. If he doesn't deliver, your problem is solved.

Well there's no point in keeping it in the bathroom because then you'd have to go and get it all the time :p

AJK I agree, and I have tried over the years but he just has no interest. Ive pointed out many times with regards to IT Security, but he says its boring and he would rather repair them, and discipline is hard when i work away so much, I'm not going to go into how he treats his mum, but it isn't good.

I fear this is a twist that would oust even the great king of twist, M Night shyamalalalahalamahahn.

OP is in love with his stepson, swooned by his elite and cryptic hacker skills. He is too bitterly confused to admit it. Stepson turns out to be a broom, OP is shocked and more confused. OP elopes with a broom.

Theres going to be a big market relatively soon for people who have the right knowledge. What you need to do is get him learning programming, get him a raspberry pi etc - follow the more sensible advice in this thread basically.
