Advice Needed

Without knowing exactly what your stepson is doing, it is hard to offer advice. If he is using a keylogger, wipe all the hard drives, reinstall the OS and use proper drive/OS encryption as well as changing all FB/email accounts etc. and putting two-step verification on all of them. Oh and make sure the phone used for two-step verification is a mobile that he doesn't have access to obviously.

like him this is full of morons

He's full of morons? There's your problem!

Serious answers:

a) You've already mentioned you're not particularly au fait with IT. If he's anything of a decent hacker, then unfortunately this means you have pretty much no chance in stopping him getting into your kit. Some previous good advice already, encrypt your computers using a decent length, not easy to guess password. 12 characters, mixed upper and lower case including numeric and special characters, something like "$jK0L)b7x6f)*". Don't write this down. Ever.

b) Again as already mentioned, this is unfortunately a problem of discipline. If you get the opportunity, frape him. If he leaves his PC logged in, get on there, delete his personal files (make backups first), abuse his friends on facebook, transfer all his money from his bank account into yours (ok maybe not that one), basically destroy his digital life (not in a way that can't be recovered). Let him see what it's like to have someone go through and violate your personal life like that, might teach him a lesson?

c) Give him some good and bad examples of what his "hacking" could lead to. Show him some of the sentences that people who have been caught have been given, such as the Lulzsec guys a few months ago: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22552753

Also show him some job descriptions (and more importantly salary levels) for security specialists. If he really is as good as you're making out, he could be earning megabucks ;)

Finally, as already mentioned, he's probably not really as good as you think. It's relatively easy to "hack" into people you know's accounts and systems you're familiar with. Hell, I could get around anything my mum put on the family PC, and the majority of stuff on our school PCs when I was 14, and I'm not by any stretch of the imagination a "hacker" or security specialist (and certainly wasn't back then!!).

TL,DR:

  • If he is as good as you're making out, and you're not techy, you're not going to be able to "out-tech" him, so it's a waste of time trying.
  • The only real way you might be able to get through to him is to get him to realise the consequences of his actions, why he shouldn't be doing it, and how to use his skills constructively.
  • He's probably not actually <that> good anyway, so don't worry about it.

oh and i didn't JUST buy a mac purely to stop him hacking it

Well actually, that is what you said.
"I have bought an Applemac as these are much harder to hack"

You appear to be asking for a technical solution to a discipline problem? Well what's the point in us advising you if neither parent is computer literate.

Teenagers are moody creatures, it's your job to focus his interest in something other than ****ing you off.

Why do I get the feeling this 'legendary hacker' is just using a sticky note he found with mums passwords on it. My parents are the same..a note book with all passwords and logins kept next to the PC -__-

OP seems to care more about bragging of his sons hacking skills...

lol tell him to hack 127.0.0.1 I'm waiting.

if he tries it tell me so I know my firewall stopped him ;)
Let's see how good a hacker he is without his scripts and known exploits

I used to be a "hacker"
it involved using a port scanner and a guide + tools for a known vulnerability almost every computer at the time had. (old IIS exploit)
It took about 50 seconds in a web browser to install an FTP client with full drive access

Theres going to be a big market relatively soon for people who have the right knowledge. What you need to do is get him learning programming, get him a raspberry pi etc - follow the more sensible advice in this thread basically.

Agreed, if you can (despite his total lack of regard for your/yourwife's privacy) point his obvious skill in a more constructive direction then it will better serve him in the future. Teenagers needs engagement and purpose and inspiration.

Good luck, i have all this coming with my 3...dear god

Let me take a wild stab in the dark here...

While you're away working, your 'son' has hacked your wife's PC and gone on lots of dating sites and social media and sent lots of raunchy messages etc as your 'wife'.. You've found out and your wife says your son must have hacked it all. Amirite? ;)

Not sure if serious.... 127.0.0.1 is the loopback address for resolving localhost and is non-routable. At least give the lad something to work with!

I'm not going to go into how he treats his mum, but it isn't good.

I'd be more interested in sorting your family issues out, then you might find that these things happening might actually stop.

I'm sure this is a massive wind up but on the off chance this is real.

If he is hacking a facebook account from his phone he is probably using DroidSheep. This allows you to take over other phone internet sessions. Mainly this is used to post on other peoples Facebook accounts for "jokes".

Still anyway I love this place :D
