Hi this is a crossover question about monitors and graphics cards. If a mod wants to move it that's cool.

I want a new monitor and the bigger the better. I have my mind set on the LG 34" '97 model but I'm open to suggestions such as Iiyama 40" monitors etc.

Predominant use will be games - IL2:BOS/BOM, Squad and other FPSs like Far Cry series, Crysis series and Dishonored 2 when its out. I also am a keen photographer so colour accuracy is important.

I currently run a 580GTX with an i7 4770k and 16Gb ram. Mono is a Sabertooth but I cannot remember the exact model. I know I'll need to upgrade the graphics card substantially.

So, in the real world and bears my in mind I can see when the frame rate drops below 55 or so, why monitor/graphics combo is good?

Is that LG monitor a good bet or is there a better alternative? Is it good enough for photo editing ie it has great colour accuracy? Is a single 980 ok or do I need a 980Ti? Or is dual 970s a better option?

Or, and I loathe the fact that technology moves on so you're always behind the curve (and I'm damn'd impatient), do I wait for the next Nvidia cards and whatever monitors are due to come out?

Cheers

How deep are your pockets?

A decent large gaming monitor that is also good for photos means an IPS screen. Gaming means high refresh rates and preferably Gsync (or AMD's equivalent if going for the red team), and also enough GPU grunt to drive it. Think at least a GTX980ti.

This doesn't come cheap.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,511.64
(includes shipping: £11.70)

If that is too much then it's a case of compromise. There are very good 27in screens at 1440p, but will still need a 980ti to get the best from them.

Hmm my pockets probably aren't that deep but the VAT should be recoverable.

What about if I did photoediting on my current screen and kept the monster screen for gaming?

Also would dual 970s do or better to have one 980Ti? I suppose an alternative may be dual 980s (not Tis) but that may overstretch the budget.

Edit: I really don't want a curved screen.

A single card is always the better option really, for ease of use. The 980ti is an utter beast for the price - nearly Titan levels of performance. The 980 is overpriced considering the 980ti really isn't that much more expensive

If you're going 1440p or above there really is no other sensible choice in my opinion.

I'm wanting to step up to a new large format IPS monitor too as I'm still using a pair of old Lacie 20" IPS panels - the colour is beautiful and they still work well, but they are 4:3 ratio.

But monitor technology seems to be at a bit of crossroads at the moment, what with G-Sync, FreeSync, 4k, 5k etc etc. In order to game on these huge monitors it needs a seriously beefy GPU setup and it's possible to get tied into a vendor lock because of sync format war.

Personally I'm [reluctantly] waiting for the new set of Nvidia Pascal cards to come out and prices to settle. Hopefully by then the G-Sync and FreeSync situation will be clearer - surely someone is going to win out as always happens in these format wars?
