Hello all and thanks in advance. I posted a while back but then real life took over and I had to leave my new PC purchase on the backburner for a while. Budget is not that much of an issue considering I want to build my system around the below listed components and they make up most of the cost of the system anyway. What I would like is advice on a total build built around these components or alternatives that will give the same performance (For High End Gaming, Autocad and 3D Studio Max)

or

With the following GPU

Which is best processor and graphics for extreme gaming and design work/computing etc?

Which is best board for these and what is recommended? Any other advice on other components suchs as Memory, Hardrives (1SSD and 2 HDD depending on size) Cooling, Monitors etc.

Will future upgrades be able to be done with ease or will a new machine need to be built etc?

I am looking to make a meaty purchase now that will last me a good few years but leave me in a decent position to upgrade if and when required.

I have listed a lot and apologies if this is TLDR.

Thanks

Could you please provide a specc for complex lighting/rendering and extreme gaming with costings and one for just modelling and extreme gaming with costings making use of top end components or those just below.

If then there is not a great deal of gulf between them in terms of price I will go with the the top end specc. Even though I will use it for work, it will be for my home system where mainly it will be used for gaming while leaving things to run in the background (multi tasking) or making amendments to already created objects and drawings.

I am not familiar with how much all of this would cost in terms of components so can't really give a ball park figure. However, if I can have a look at pricings for the two scenarios I can then make better decision on budget.

Thanks

Darth

Thanks for the builds. Appreciate your help. One question I do have remaining is in terms of any future upgrades. Are the boards listed above in a position to be stable for a good few years in terms of upgrading to future components ( don't want to be in a position where I have to buy a new board) would rather just plug newer components in without having to worry about the board I have.

For upgradability the Z97 platform is the way to go, as its billed as supporting Broadwell. Though i don't think that'll warrant an upgrade.

X79 is pretty EOL now, though X99 is around the corner so if the hex core is calling to you wait for that.

Personally though, theres no harm in just picking up the haswell rig. It'll bea good 4-5 years before its worth upgrading it anyway.

Is the X99 due August 29th as some sites state or are we looking at a few more weeks?

Think I am almost there now.

Thanks

Darth

Ive decided to go with the x99 rampage v extreme and haswell e 5960 x processor. I am looking for feedback and prices on what other components to get to complete my build. I will be using it for gaming rendering and overclocking. So far i have been kindly assisted in listing the above specification.

Id appreciate your thoughts on the above and any improvements or recomendations provided.

Many thanks

I think the 295x2 is a good choice, though i'd still keep you're eye on the TITAN, as it would help with the rendering side, as many (if not all programs ultilising GPU rendering) don't recognise Xfire Setups, which the 295x2 is, so in Rendering terms, the TITAN is the better choice. Games wise the opposite is true.

I think the CPU is a bit of a waste, do you REALLY need 16 logical cores, the Hex core 5820k is around a third of the price, and give you room to add a 8 core IF you need it. That'd be my choice.

I think YOu can get better value Motherboard and RAM too, they are TOP END but are expensive for what they offer and what you'll use them for.

Really there's no need to spend over £2k-£2.5k, even with a monitor.

Ok I should have mentioned that I want a dual screen setup, whereby I can play or have open 2 games e.g Warcraft, FFXIV or Battlefied 4 (Destiny PC when released) side by side (is this possible?) on mid to high settings. They dont both have to be 4k screens but would be nice if I could.

Darth, having two high end games playing at the same time is beyond the mathematical calculations of any computer speccer on here i'd assume. Most games if not all games are designed to use the majority of the computer's output at any one time. The only games i can comfortably play whilst watching a video at the same time are ones such as fifa and a few MMO's. when it comes to high end FPS games things start to struggle, especially when the game itself normally hijacks the entirety of the GPU usage causing videos to stutter and often disable windows aero.

What about having 2 games open (let's say FF XIV and WoW) not at ultra settings (medium to low) and being able to alt tab between both games in windowed mode or just having one game open and watching netflix on the other or streaming other content while having something like Ventrilo, Mumble or Team Speak open. It's why I have gone for the top end components so a year or two down the line I can still do what I have said without the need to upgrade. Thanks and apologies for questions that might seem strange to some relating to how I want to use my new build.

Darth

PS doesnt have to be 4k^^ I can live with maybe 1 4k monitor and anormal one or even 2 normal at 1080p (above 27")

I don't know how possible that is and (if it is) how it would affect CPU core usage. I suspect that 8 cores would fair no better than 4 cores in that situation as they'd be trying to access the same part of the CPU. Especially as games aren't really designed with those HUGE numbers of cores in mind, you may struggle (if you succeed atall).

You'd need more than a 295x2 to run 2 x 4k screens anyway.

I've heard of people running multiple instances of the same game simultaneously, but never two different games at the same time. I doubt there's anyone on this board who can advise you on that, you'll just have to try it.

What is the best possible set up I can go for to see if running two games as per above works as best as it can.

Thanks

Darth

Hi Guys

I have basically decided on the following unless the experts amongst you advise me otherwise:

Rampage V extreme board
Inno3d GTX 980 gpu
Intel 5960x extreme haswell

What i need some assitance with is the memory, power supply, cooling & case. I need to make a purchase in the next day or so. Immediate feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The core usage of this bad boy will be high end gameing and multimedia/work purposes possible link up with a 65 inch tv.

Thanks

Darth

Hi

Are 2 x 8 sticks for memory better or 4 x 4?

Also this case lists restrictions for cpu cooler, does this limit what cooling options are available? Will the board chosen fit comfortably within this case or are there better cases then this?

Thanks
